In getting back to archery after about a 35 year layoff, I found that I needed a lot of information. Fortunately, I like to read, so I started buying bare bow shooting books. I have to say I don’t think I’ve found a book that didn’t offer some sort of help, but ended up with a few favorites.
The first one I got was Byron Ferguson’s Become the Arrow. It’s a quick, fun read with a lot of good information. A lot of Ferguson’s character comes through, which makes it entertaining.
Anthony Camera’s Shooting the Stickbow, A Practical Approach to Classical Archery, 2nd Ed., is a big, thick tome that really gets into detail. This one helped me take a closer look at how to hold the string and what and why it works. This has been a very valuable book for me.
The last shooting book I picked up this Spring is G. Fred Asbell’s Advanced Instinctive Shooting for Bowhunting. I’ve been looking at purchasing his other books, but then this one came out. This one has really helped put it all together for me. Asbell covers the push-pull concept over and over, really drilling it in and explaining the importance of it really well. In the Campfire Forum you can see George D. Stout’s great short shooting videos, “55 Yards Behind the Shooter..” where he mentions pushing the bow arm toward the target. Stout’s video shows you the benefit.
In the end, I have to reiterate that these books and others have been very valuable and are worth having in your library. I’d love to read what the rest of you have found to be helpful. Thanks, dwc -
DWC — I for one have never read a how-to book on traditional shooting in my life. Maybe I’d be a better shot if I had. 😛 Thanks for sharing this info. dp

I wonder about that. Seems like you’re doing just fine. When I picked the bow back up after so long in moth balls, it seemed like I couldn’t miss or miss by much. It didn’t take long for me to fill my head with lots of information and have my shots go straight to the dump. I’m still glad to have access to some great reading to help me get back on target. Thanks! dwc

Another excellent source of information is Masters of the Barebow DVD series, particularly volumes two and three.

DWC –
All the books you mention are excellent.
My “go to” book for all things Traditional is T. J. Conrads – Traditonal Bowhunter’s Handbook. Good chapters on shooting and practice. A similiar book [but a little dated] is Sam Fadala’s – Traditional Archery.
Different but interesting is Timeless Bowhunting: The Art, The Science, & the Spirit by Roy S. Marlow. Although this book talks about all Bows -Tradbow [ quite a bit]and “Modern”, The discussion of Bow PBR {Point Blank Range – “Depth of Kill”}
Is Intriquing.

Thanks for your comments. I have Fadala’s book, both Traditional Archery and the Black Powder Bible. Great stuff. Conrads’ is on the list to get. Much appreciated. dwc

Nope.. Probably better off if you don’t. I think some folks think about it too much and get all tangled up in their drawers.
Actually I have read quite a few. Understanding Winning Archery, Instinctive Insights, Instinctive Shooting, Become the Arrow, Hitt’in Them Like Howard Hill to name a few. They are all good, but you still have to adapt and use what works best for you.
KISS – keep it simple… just go shoot and have fun!
