Has any data been gathered on tapered shafts and if they help with penetration?
The reason I ask is I have resently built a set of carbon arrows that are fully tapered from about 11/32 at the point end to about 5/16 at the nock end. It seems to me that this big to little shaft design would assist in penetration.
The taper itself helps with the FoC to start out. The arrows I built are 28.5″ and tipped with 200gr heads which gave me the best flight during bare shaft tuning. The EFoC comes in at 20.18% so they should work well from that point of view, but I’m thinking it might be even better because of the taper.
I missed my only shot so far this season so I don’t have a kill with the arrows to see first hand yet, but I hope that all changes real quick.

Bounty Hunter, first of all I want to say welcome aboard here, you finally made it over. I can’t answer your question as I have not shot them.

Bounty — welcome here. Aside from Ashby’s research, single-tapered shafts have long been known to enhance accuracy when shooting broadheads. I have some GrizzlyStick tapered carbons and they definitely offer a headstart on FOC. Hard to go wrong there it seems. But I’m surprised you have only 20 percent FOC. Your insert and adapter must be light? I get around 26 percent with a similar setup using 100-grain inserts and adapters on 200-grain El Grandes. Just to kill something and take it from there. 😀 ‘flier

Thanks for the welcome guys!
The shafts I’m using are new, almost still prototypes. They are Quest Thumpers and the problem with them is there are no weighted inserts that fit them yet. They were provided to me for testing. I would have started with a bit stiffer shaft if I’d picked them. I’ll take the 20% with the way they fly though and with Whitetails and Hogs are my primary targets they should work nicely. My bow is also a little light for anything bigger 48# @ 28″ and my draw is 27″ so I’m getting about 46# out of her.
