I hunt public land in Reno Co. Kansas. I’ve seen 125 class whitetails for the last 5 years. I killed my best ever last year, 11 pts. Have blown a fair number of shots during this time. Lots of deer near Waconda Lake (Glen Elder). I believe Fish and Game sold 21,000 out of state permits last year.

Hasn’t been for me. This is a substantial increase as Kansas has only recently added out of state permits. The first year was approximately 3,000.

I’ve hunted whitetails throughout much of Kansas and I don’t think any one county is better than another. There are more deer in the eastern third of the state but more hunting pressure also. The same cover that holds pheasants in the northern and western part of the state can produce some really nice bucks. I would recommend scouting out several areas right now while the rubs, scrapes and trails are still visible before spring green up.

I live in North Central Kansas (near Glen Elder) but grew up in Manhattan. I agree with Huckbuck, all counties of the state could harbor good deer so it really depends on the habitat you want to hunt. North East Kansas will look a lot like Tennessee. The South East has the highest deer densities. South Central to South West Kansas is where many (but not all) of the outfitters you see on TV operate. North Central and North West Kansas have good deer but the habitat is more open and there are Mulies mixed in with the Whitetails. And far in the South West there are fewer deer but still good bucks show up occasionally. Don’t be fooled by all the hype though good deer take work here just like anywhere else. Hope this helps
