What are your plans for the rest of winter, now that most big game seasons are over? Any new projects? Exciting travel hunts?

I plan to hunt quail and ducks, mixed in with some hog hunting with the longbow. Some fishing trips to the gulf. Have a lot of burning and other things to take care of before turkey season. In other words, it’s a fun but busy time of year!

So what do you all have coming up?

I would love to hunt some quail but in our drought conditions I will not. I saw more birds this year than in the last couple but not enough for me to go after them.

Where I used to see several large coveys, I’ve seen two with 4-10 birds. Better though than the one or two birds I was seeing for a couple of years. So maybe some rain this spring and let them multiply.

So I’ll be occasionally trying to call some coyotes and trying to convert some pigs from nocturnal to diurnal.

          Good luck to me eh:?

Problem there is the hogs retreat into the river bottom at daytime and roam at night to feed and the river bottom is out of bounds to me. Otherwise I would love to oozing around in the salt cedar jungle spot and stalking.

Maybe I need to get a hog squealer and give it a try.

Rabbits? The drought has taken it’s toll on them too so those that would have been so unfortunate for me to hit with an arrow are also free to reproduce.

Like said, lots to do and around here we hope it rains/snows.

I hope to hunt some hogs with the recurve. I’d like to get into some ducks, but the swamp has filled with so much water, it is hard to pin point where they are flying in and out. It’s also more difficult to get to them. Late winter and into early spring is one of my favorite times for bass fishing.

I hope to get to do some of these things between catching up on neglected projects around the house. 🙁

Now that hunting seasons are over it’s time for the archery tournaments to begin. Our club’s indoor spot league starts tonight, and the IBO Indoor 3D World Championship is this weekend. After that are local shoots, state, sectional, and national target championships and some 3Ds here and there. Once the ground unthaws I have a few habitat projects planned on our WI property, including transplanting a few hundred more white pines and tweaking a few food plots.

                      No hogs here.

Planning to get the girls out on the snowshoes, so I can watch them fall down. But we need snow for that, no snow, just cold for now.

Be nice if I could figure out what I did wrong, and do something about it. I was thinking about it in church the other day, and remembered how Mom would jam her elbow into me every time I moved. Thinking I might still be having a problem sitting still.

Likely off R2s lease, being he lives in TX!

Me? Well, having just had hernia outpatient surgery today, no lifting for many weeks, (6), my goal is to finally get all the stuff I’ve not yet unpacked put somewhere organized! Without lifting of course! 🙄

When I’m back in fighting form, I want to rent a sod cutter, cut the blasted Bermuda grass off, burn it, then Roundup the ground and till it in…then let it lay fallow a couple months, till again and get a garden in finally I have a place

Next, I got one of those Horse Stall Mats and want to sink 2 4×4’s upright, mount the mat to a cross 4×4 and get help to hoist it on top and lag it fast for my archery backstop!

Then start “working the bale” at my height since with moving I neither shot nor hunted this whole fall… so I’m going to have to start over and re-develop my form/back tension, etc.

Somewhere in there I want to learn some good spots to go fly fishing… and some turkey hunting. Got one invite to Middle TN to do turkey and bow fishing…hot diggity! Now to get healed up and out there!

Still one more hunt left! And then when I get back, I’ll squeeze in one more chukar hunt before that season ends on Jan 31st.

Snowshoe hares are still open into March, so I will get out in search of those.

And then before you know it, turkeys open in April!

Hope you have a smooth and speedy recovery, Doc!

Really jonzin to get some bow time in sooner than later… and able to do stuff again… but this too shall pass!

Truth is I just fiddle with my gear a little bit this time of year. A fair amount of my work puts me in the field on a daily basis. I honestly have no interest in going outdoors voluntarily this time of year. I’ve had enough fresh air by the end of the week. It’s kind of a year round dilemma of the best kind:D

It belongs to one who will not let anyone hunt. Hogs are tearing the hell out of the place too.:evil:

Good old Texas Wildlife folks just shrug their shoulders and tell them hunting would help a bunch. 🙂
