so after many years absence(almost 30) from bowhunting or even picking up a bow i decided it was high time to get back to it. I decided I wanted to go traditional as in the past I really enjoyed shooting a recurve and I love the classic looks and feel. anyway money is tight right now and I have just been keeping my eyes open for a good deal. back when I was a kid my dad had an old fiberglass recurve very similar to a Ben Pearson Jett. I am not sure what the make is on this bow as any identifying marks have worn off. my father passed away a few years ago and I now have this bow and I thought I might start using this until I get something else. the bow looks to be in decent shape, there does not seem to be any cracks or anything. the string needs to be replaced and after seeing all the options in strings I am not sure what style would be best for this setup. i do remember shooting this bow back when I was a teen and recall it being a bit brutal as far as hand shock. looking forward to hearing any suggestions on a string or any other tips folks might have.

Not a suggestion on string, but have you checked various forums to see if you could find a USED T/D Sammick? They run only about $145 new and you can purchase more limbs to suit you?

I’d avoid a filling jarring bow anyway I could! :0

I imagine with a bow of that era you need to go with B50 or B55 Dacron. Measure the bow from string nock to string nock around the curve of the bow or if you have old string measure it. Poundage? A 14 strand Dacron string will be way good until you can string it and weigh it if it’s not marked.

I agree on a Samick for a get into it bow. I’ve been shooting a long time and I enjoy the heck out of my Samick. Shoots where I point it, doesn’t jar the hand and with a fastflite string and some wool puffers for silencers I get complimented on it’s quietness.

I like making old things work. Me especially:D:D

              R2,

One might guess (?) that if it’s fiberglass bow like we shot in gym class, it wouldn’t matter on the B50 string…but what do I know…I said I was GUESSING!

I love your comment about making old things work… but my elbows would never tolerate any bow that had hand shock… so I’d fork up the $$ for a used or even new Samick.

There are even some old Bear bow dealers around that sell bows under $200 in fine shape! I just don’t enjoy shooting them much, but when worked at a shop, shot the bejabbers outa a samick kit for kids… it was GREAT!

Welcome Pete. Hard hand shock can also be caused by the string being significantly the wrong length. I’d start by trying to determine the recommended brace height and making sure your current string is in the sweet spot.

I never knew that about hand shock and string length, David! Coming here is for us ALL to learn new things…

all very good info. i have the old tattered string and it is 60″ long. not sure on recommended brace height as I am not sure on the make. correct me if i am wrong but I understand that the brace height is measured from the back of the bow to the string? like i said in my original post I think the bow is very similar to the Jett, at least the color and design looks the same but the model info has rubbed off. I am not sure yet on the draw weight but it if I remembered it correctly it felt about the same as my 45 lb bear that I used to shoot when i was a teen. thanks for the tips on the string and suggestions on a new budget bow. I have actually been considering a samick bow so it is nice to hear them recomended.

I posted a few weeks ago and appreciate all the help with string info. I mentioneed that the bow is very similar to a Ben Pearson Jett but I have been unable to identify it exactly. I know a picture would help but i am unable to post one right now. anyway I can tell where the label was on the bow and it seems to match were the ben pearson lables are on some photos i have seen but it appears that the label was in gold paint and I have not seen a Ben Pearson all fiberglass bow with a gold label. I have also checked out pictures of actionbow fiberglass recurves to see i I can tell what it is. I have two questions then.

for anyone familiar with Ben Pearson all fiberglass bows was there a model that had a gold colored label?

what other companies were manufacturing all fiberglass recurve bows in the 1960’s to early 70’s?

                      Bri

I had a solid glass Shakespeare in the late 60’s.

Agree with David the hand shock could have been a problem with the string.

My glass bow was very smooth. Mine had at least an 8″ brace height if I can recall. Had more problems getting popped on the forearm than anything else.

If you could tell us how long it is by laying a flexible tape along it from tip to tip we might at least be able to give you some idea of string length needed.

so with a 60″ string the brace height was 8.5″. measuring the bow around the curve it comes out around 67″ measuring from the floor to the tip when un braced it is 64″ the currednt string looks ok other than the serving but it is at least 40 years old so I new string I am sure is in order. I don’t normally like buying stuff online but i think i will grab one from three rivers. thanks for all the help.
