Folks I’m in need of a stout mosquito repellent. Currently hunting public lands in southwestern Oklahoma and we have been getting a LOT of rain which is bringing out the skeeters with a vengeance. Ticks and flies haven’t been an issue but for just an evening hunt I have bites everywhere my pack doesn’t cover. Pure deet isn’t cutting it or is just getting sweated away in this heat. Suggestions?

Not a doctor, but I am told Carotene (a dietary supplement) which is contained in carrots, will make you smell objectionable to the skeeters. On the other hand Arwen hasn’t had a skeeter bite in 12 years, and she doesn’t like carrots. Which is just one of the many things I don’t understand about this child. The gentle breezes coming off the lake make the skeeters crash and burn. We like that.

For some reason the bugs here prefer my ‘young’ blood as my hunting buddy just lets them fly around him without a care in the world and remains bite free-mostly.

That does have a certain appeal.

Medical studies on mosquito-borne illnesses pretty consistently show that nothing works better than DEET for topical application. People keep trying to find something bad about it but that has been hard to do, although most authorities recommend against it’s use in young children. If you really are sweating it off, the problem likely lies with the formulation rather than the DEET itself, so you might try switching brands. Thermacells do work well–as long as you are staying in one place. All I can say for sure from a medical perspective is that with the dramatic increase in serious mosquitoe-borne illnesses (think West Nile, zika, chikungaya, dengue) we had all best have a plan in place. It is only a matter of time until they get wherever we hunt. Don
