I built a dowler that uses a router and a cordless drill. Do a search and you’ll come up with several ways to build them. Mine cuts shafts from 3/8 square stock then compresses them on the out feed to 11/32. Sure as hell beats buying shafts.

I know like three years ago 3 rivers had a planer that cut the square peices of wood into shafts? You could even buy the square peices of wood to cut down, dont know if that is still available?

Is the shaft shooter powered by an electric drill? I’ve seen those advertised somewhere. I understand they are pricey. I have the plane that GTA mentioned from 3 rivers. It works well but production is slow because you’re basically hand planing the shafts. I compress mine by driving them through a 11/32″ hole drilled in some flat iron. Just have to make sure they are very close to 11/32″ before driving or they may break.

I just watched a video about this. The guy drilled a hole the size he wanted in a piece of wood the mounted a sawblade on the edge of the hole. He then put the dowel or length of wood into a drill and feed it into the hole.
