        Hello. Just joined hoping to find some information on finding a re-curve to fit me. Was surprised to see another thread with a tall guy moving into a long bow and he had several tall contributors to the thread. Glad to see I am not as alone as I thought. Some of my questions were answered there. I am 6’7″ currently shoot an older Browning wheel bow I bought around ’92. I love the old bow but really want to step up some to the challenge of a re-curve. I think a long bow would be to much of a jump for me. My bow is set up as a 32.5″ draw at 64#. I think it is safe to say I should be looking for a 60″ or better bow and think a 45# draw at 28″ will still be doable with the extra 3 or 4″ of draw but my question is how much extra stress does that put on the limbs especially if I am looking at an older vintage bow? Not knowing up from down I am thinking along the lines of a 60″ 45# at 28″ Kodiak Hunter or something along that line but ??? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

          I have a 60″ Bear KH and feel that I am pressing the limits of the bow with about a 29.5″ draw. If your draw with traditional recurves is really 32.5 (you may find that with trad equipment your draw will be shorter than you use with wheels) You will be wanting to look at recurves in the 66-68″ length. Just an opinion and if you can, talk to a few bowyers and get their ideas they will know what you need regarding their individual bows.

            Welcome, 45. You are a tall guy! Kieth Chastain, in CO, is a fellow “Stretch” and a bowyer who makes bows especially for tall guys. You might check him out. He’ll talk your arm and both legs off, but is a solid dude and makes lovely bows.

                I’ll second Dave’s welcome and weigh in.

                I too am 6’7″ and was pulling a 62″ Don Dow D/R longbow @50#/28″ to 31″ and (perhaps hitting the “stacking” wall? Regardless, I drove from Seattle to a bow shop in Oregon with a bow I “knew” I would love to try. It is an older Wing Presentation. A real elegant beauty and in excellent shape. Strung up I immediately drew the 33″ I FELT I SHOULD BE ABLE TO PULL. This bow is 40#@ 28″ and weighed in at 53# at my 33″. That’s enought for me to be good to go. I see lot’s of used bows over time listed in 66″ and greater lengths.

                I too appreciate hearing from long draw archers.

                Perhaps we need a thread about EFOC for longdarts next?

                  Sorry 45, I left out a bit of info. The Wing is a recurve with long sweeping curves. It is 69″ AMO (62″ unstrung) and I am guessing about 65″ strung. It is I believe a target bow by design. It pulls so smoooooth it is hard to describe. The archery shop is owned by a bowyer and has accurate scales. He watched my 33″ Arrow Dynamics field point disappear behind the back of the bow from the off side so we know it is a 33″ draw. I have usually shot 31 to 311/2 with likely a bit too much weight and hence the shorter draw. Fred Asbel speaks to these issues in TBM articles.

                    Thank you Larry for the info. and welcome. Had to look up the Wing Presentation and it is a beautiful bow. There are several Wing’s on e-bay currently all classy looking bows. My use will primarily be for hunting.There is one Wing that is 64″ 45# on there I was watching but not sure 64″ is quite long enough?? Wish I had a traditional shop in our area.
