It was the strangest thing, I literally just waxed my sting looked everything over this past weekend. I fixed some arrows, added some fletching, general maintenance of my equipment. I was in my backyard flinging some arrows last night and I nocked up an arrow that had, well lets say not the best nock on it. I new this nock was loose on the string but not loose enough to fall off the string when I would point the arrow down while it is nocked. I was attempting a snap shot and when I release the string the arrow flew all of 8 feet and my string broke at the top loop and my bow basically dry fired at 3/4 draw. The bow seems to be fine I had another string that I put on and am back and ready to go, no cracks no splinters, nothing.

I picked up the arrow and looked at the nock and it literally broke in half. It looks like the string basically cut one side of the nock grip off.

Anything like this ever happen to anyone else? I inspect and wax my sting 2-3 times a year typically before fall hunting, then once I pick it back up after winter.

How often should you replace your sting?

Sounds to me like the nock just broke. That happens from time to time, so it’s good to pay attention to it. If a nock is fitting loosely on the string, inspect it. Especially if it was fitting well before.

The string likely broke because of the dry fire. Strings will usually give you plenty of notice when they are getting ready to retire. Frayed fibers at the string loops is a good sign.

No need to change a string that looks good.

Thats the thing that is puzzles me….I inspected and wax the entire string this past weekend, loops and all. I did not see any abnormal wear or fraying. Only 1 of the strings broke that make up my string too. It was very strange to me.

              T-Roy –

I think Steve is spot-on. From your description, I would guess that your nock broke upon release, essentially resulting in a dry fire, which is why the string parted. It can happen even if the string is in good condition. Glad it wasn’t worse!

I had the exact same thing happen to me years ago with a wheel bow. The arrow went a couple of yards (nock had split off) and the string snapped. When I took it to the shop the fella said ‘looks just like a dry fire’ and we figured the nock failure did just like Steve said, reproduced the same results as a dry fire.

I had this happen to me twice this winter. Thankfully, my string did not break but the nocks blew out. My guess was from the cold. I switched to nirk nocks for this year because they seem to have a bit more beef in the sides. I used a recent TBM tip for properly fitting them to my string with hot water. I get a nice snug fit.
