  Hey guys,
  
  I was expecting I’d get to do a neat write up on my latest little kayak expedition. It was a 4 day trip, myself and one other guide taking 10 unskilled paddlers out. The plan was to stop on day 2 at this island with a big goat population and shoot a couple for that night’s campfire (a 2 piece shrew classic hunter fits nicely in the nose of an exped kayak).
  
  Alas on the morning of day 2 when I pulled out the sat phone to check in with base, we got the wonderful news that we weren’t allowed to stay where we planned to that night, courtesy of a typical HQ snafu. So instead we got a 10km detour added to that days planned 20km paddle, which was… unpleasant 😉
  
  In the 3 full days of paddling we still managed to cover about 100km and stay at some wonderful, remote beaches…

  Doesn’t look like the calmest waters from the paddling picture, but the evening shots look tranquil.

  I’d hardly call that a “fail” – it looks like a great trip! In fact, it seems like a great location for TBM Rendezvous 2016…

  Great pics, Jim. Looks like a lovely trip even if you didn’t get to eat goat. But hey, I thought “fail” was an internet term restricted to barely-clad young women doing stupid stuff on cam after too many beers on a hot day? This seems much more a classic is SNAFU, to use the standard military acronym.

  It was a great little trip, with some nice campfires on the sand after a hard days paddling. I’m glad the pics turned out ok, never can tell with my little point and shoot camera, especially covered in water in a rocking kayak!

  Pretty much every morning I’d hear someone exclaim “Jim, do you have to get out of your tent before you put your pants on?”. The answer was obviously ‘yes I do’. If you can’t stand naked on a remote beach and enjoy the ocean breeze, well what’s the point of living? But I’m sure if someone had taken a photo it would’ve been a ‘fail’ in the worst internet sense of the word 😉

  Something like a forced march sitting in a tupperware boat, eh? Nothing you lean, mean infantry types couldn’t handle!

  First a 5 hour drive in PA, then a cold shot at 30 below, and now a trip down under… Sounds like someone has an early case of cabin fever.

  It’s a long haul for guys who haven’t paddled before 😀 I always tell guys your rate of movement in a kayak is about the same as pack marching and you can expect to cover about the same distance per day. The most I’ve done in a day was just short of 60km, but 30km a day for 3 days was hard work too!

  Jim–Having spent a lot of time along Australia’s magnificent coastline, I’m really curious as to where this trip took place. (The map on the Kayak isn’t much help.) Not asking you to reveal any secret spots, but maybe the approximate general area? Don

  The paddle was through the Palm Island Group, just north of Townsville in QLD. If you do a google maps search for “palm island qld australia” it should put you right on it. We basically paddled north from Townsville’s northern beaches to Palm, then n/w through the chain before cutting n/w to Lucinda, which is on the mainland just south of Hinchinbrook.
  
  The first photo was from one of the bays on the south side of Palm Island, the last two were from bays on the west side of Orpheus Island. Orpheus was genuinely spectacular, with pretty vibrant coral reefs and absolutely teeming with life.
  
  To be honest there are nicer, more accessible islands I’ve paddled around up here, but one of my regular family hikes takes me up a hill just north of town from which I have always been able to make out the shadowy outline of Palm, so it was a great adventure for me to get over there.

  Jim–I’ve actually spent a lot of time in Townsville and have seem great makes there. I never got to where you were, but I did some flyfishing for barra closer to shore. As I said when I returned from my first visit, if I were 20 years younger my next ticket would be one-way! Don

  Our Nautiraid double is ready. With your power up front and my brains in the back seat-and I’m only 67–how about around Cape Horn. And just to keep us on thread we can take our two piece elkhearts for some bow fishing:lol:

  Don, one of your books came up in a conversation with another bowhunter I met here last year and he had a photo of you at my local club from about 10-15 years ago I think, doing a book signing. It is a small world.

  So last year I paddled around a different island up here, Hinchinbrook, which was spectacular (amongst all the natural wonders there is an American B24 that crash landed on one of the peaks in ’42 and a 5 star eco resort that was abandoned about 3 years ago.. its like Jurassic Park, sans dinosaurs). Anyway, I’ve complained I didn’t see any crocs. This story came up today about a couple of fly fishermen that got followed around by a big bull croc. If I ran into that fella in my kayak, I’m not sure I’d be around to complain about it…
