I have a tube case that I got from 3Rivers years ago. It’s a good case, but it just doesn’t do arrows well. They have a separate and bigger than necessary tube for arrows, which I also have. But all together it’s a kluge.
So I haven’t taken my longbows on trips much. Been using my bear takedown. Which I really like, but… I really want to take my home made arrows, and longbow.
So I guess it’s only logical that I would have to have a home made case too.
The attached pictures are of a case I made from 4″ pvc drain pipe covered in green cotton canvas. It’s all stitched together with artificial sinew.
It will hold one bow and 12 arrows. All together it cost me less than 30 bucks to make (assuming my time is worthless 🙄 )

Really nice. Reminiscent of rod cases I’ve seen. Very nice. Thanks for sharing and the inspiration. best, dwc

Nice piece of work. I can just imagine the look on the TSA agents face when you check that in–aw sir you can’t send a rocket launcher as baggage you’ll have to carry it on.:D
That may not be far from the truth. One year I took my 35 remington on a trip. When I got to the check in counter the attendant asked me if it was unloaded.
I told her it was, but she asked for proof. So I said I could work the action if she wanted, but I didn’t think that was necessary. She insisted.
So in the middle of the departure area, with hundreds of people around, I took up my trusty old lever action, pointed it in the air, and cycled it three times.
Yea baby.

Ah the government in their infinite, all-knowing wisdom keeping us safe…????
More importantly – beautiful case Steve! Your time is worth considerable $ as I’ve paid as much as 5x that for a case not as nice as yours!!! Well done Brother 😆

Thanks!

That came out really nice looking Steve, well done! I wish I had time to try and make stuff like that but I’m still trying to be home long enough to start shaping up some selfbows!?!? Who’s idea was this work crap anyways???

Human’s spend way more time “working” for their living than most other critters. Cats come to mind. Less than an hour a day I believe is the average time wild cats spend in the pursuit of food.
Does make you wonder who has it figured out, and who doesn’t…
One of the nice things about self bows (and this bow case) is that large blocks of time are not needed to make one. Whittle on it whenever you have time, for however long you have. Good for the spirit.
Good luck with the self bow, don’t forget to post a picture!

Thanks Steve. I currently have an assortment of wood seasoning and I’m slowly working on a bench to work on them. Not to totally sidetrack your thread here but, real quick… I’m trying to work with local wood for sentimental value so I’m using birch and maple. Not ideal, I know but it’s the best suited wood in my area. I’m thinking of kinda a flatbow design with rawhide backing. I was thinking glass as I asked about before but the more I thought about it and researched it, this seemed like the better option. Knowing you have a lot more expertise here, I’d welcome any input you be willing to offer?
Thanks!
Dave.

Maple can make a really good bow. I’d go with that.
Use the birch for arrows 😀
Rawhide is good for protecting the back of the bow, but it robs cast from it. Silk or Sinew add cast.
Or just a piece of cloth to protect the back.
Or just leave it alone.
I don’t have much experience with self bows. But I did read Paul Comstock’s book on making white wood bows. And volume I of the Bowyers Bible. Between the two, Comstocks is probably the best source for getten-er-done.

Too bad you didn’t have a few empty casings to drop on the floor for added effect, but then you’d probably still be in jail. Great Story. dwc
