Never think about it. If I did I might stop shooting. I consider it relaxing and fun, so what I spend has little to do with what it takes to make the party go.

I look at it this way: if I were to shoot as many bullets, even .22, as I do arrows then it would cost me a hole lot more than a good set of arrows.

            I get about $80 a half dozen.

My regular hunting arrows run a little over $9.00 each (shaft: $4.00, insert: $.50, fletching: $.80, broadhead: $4.00, and probably a few cents in glue and paint.

My target arrow are closer to $5.00, and small game arrows are around a dollar total.

Carbons I buy from Archery Past as bare shafts with choice of nocks and brass inserts, CE250s at about $43 per half dozen. I’ll go with Jason’s estimate of feather costs and guesstimate $50 per half-dozen for finished arrows, not counting the points, which can vary from a few cents to many dollars each. I currently have a half-dozen semi-custom Sitka spruce arrows on order from Fletcher, clear finished, nothing fancy, with 4×2″ feathers. No idea what they will cost, but it’s worth it in my search for a EFOC woody set-up. Likely the cheapest arrows are aluminum, but they are very limiting insofar as you can’t get brass inserts for most sizes.

To answer your direct question — what does a dozen finished arrow go for — I have no idea since I’ve not bought finished arrows in years or decades. Too much fun “making” them and a big savings.

Don’t worry about what your frinds think…you are having fun and shooting a great set-up. How much do golf clubs and golf balls cost?

I spend just as much or more than you do..

                  Enjoy what you are doing!!!

I use custom made, footed, pine hex shafts that cost around $12 per arrow. this does not include the heads. I love wood arrows and used to make them myself, but sometimes I wasn’t that happy with the appearance. The custom made are awesome ! Professional looking, because they are made by a professional, not me:wink:

Ugh, I think I worked out the other day that my arrows are like 70 something New Zealand dollars each… Makes me sick to think if I lost one whilst out hunting.

I’m with Ireland on this, nobody should feel guilty spending some money on a healthy outdoor activity! How much is down to the individual. I’ve just ordered a dozen wooden shafts fletched, nocked and field pointed for the equivalent of $80 US. That’s the right amount for my archery but everyone is different.

Bright Cap Wraps have definitely helped me find more than a few arrows. They have paid for themselves many times over.

But ultimately, they’re projectiles, not boomerangs, and that means some of them aren’t going to come back to you. Such is the nature of it.

Wexbow — What’s your favorite Irish whiskey? My wife is part and we hope to visit someday … when I win the lottery.

NZlongbow — Man, that’s rough. If you don’t want a fancy finish, you can order perfectly good finished arrows (minus broadheads) from several reputable makers here in the U.S. for $150 to $200. Priority mail to NZ should be that much since arrows don’t weigh that much … and you’d come out WAY cheaper than what you say you’re paying now. For $70 each, heck I’ll make ’em for you and pay the postage to NZ. 😛

Not that I’m much of whiskey drinker but I am partial to a drop of Bushmills, Black Bush if I have the choice. Jameson 12 year is a nice treat. And I’m not averse to my Scottish cousins either as I do like a dramm of Glenmorangie!

Dave, we’ll have to do an archery exchange as I’m waiting on the lotto numbers so I can do a bowhunt over on your side of the pond! 😉

IMOP you are on the right track.

Yes you can spend too much money on arrows but you can also as easily overspend on a bow. If it takes a little more in cash to get them right then you need to spend it. Point being, why spend $1200.00 or more on a custom bow and worry about spending $100.00 on arrows? The arrow is the business end and must be right. With a miss matched set of arrows you may as well be shooting a bargain basement mass produced bow that will shoot them. Nothing wrong with that at all. You would be better off. There is not enough emphasis put on arrows. I know of no one that has called a Bowyer and told them, “I have a set of Heritage 150s cut to 28” and I want 250 grains on the business end. Build me a bow that will shoot them”. Silly I know but trying to make a point. Get you a set of good quality arrows matched to you and the bow.

I dont think much on the cost of arrows, for one the better quality they are the longer they last, for stump shooting hunting, and target shooting. I use a few diffrent arrow shafts only wood for me. Douglas fir which is a good all around strong shaft in my books lots better than ceder, The better is eather western larch or vg bamboo, I make all my arrows so that helps, today i machined out 1300 fir and spruce arrows

My arrows are as cheap as I can get them and as strong and efficent as I can get them. I am shooting beman ics bowhunters.

Anyone that thinks you need .001 straightness for hunting arrows has never shot wood arrows before. get out some calipers and see how big .006 really is. that kind of straightness is only needed in field archery for pros.

I also use 100grain brass inserts and 300 grain points or for hunting a 100 grain BH adapter and 200 grain grizzly broadhead.

These figures are not including fletching, I use wild turkey feathers and 3″ feathers so 4-5 feathers will do 4 arrows. I also didn’t include the footing that I put on my arrows because you can always find someone willing to donate a couple shafts for footing.

My practice arrows and 3D arrows cost me $5.25ea. and my hunting arrows cost me $11.33ea.

                                      Beman ICS bowhunter =$3.75

                                      100gr Brass insert =$1.08

                                      300gr Field point =$0.42

                                      100gr Broadhead adapter =$0.67

                                      200gr Grizzly BH =$5.83

this is the cheapest setup I can come up with for target and get them the way I want them. And they fly straight with feathers and without. I could use cheaper broadheads but they wouldn’t be what I want from them. IMHO I think grizzly makes the best broadhead for the money.

All kidding aside my average dozen goes about $180 with shipping and heads. But good wood is gonna cost yah and the Deer deserve the best.
