South Texas asked me to post some photos of his daughter’s first traditional harvest. First, it is an honor. Second, congratulations. Here is the story ST sent:
South Texas wrote:
This is my Daughter Layla with her first Javelina. She was using a 36# Longbow at her DL with POC shafts and a Zwickey BH.
We were hunting on a friends ranch in Laredo in search of hogs and Javi’s. Finally on day three we ran into a few of them feeding. She was able to get within 12 or so yards of them. She waited and waited until finally a broadside shot was presented to her. She looked at me as said, ” Dad I can take him”, and she did. Perfect lung shot. I am one proud Father…I hope you like the pictures.
Truth be told, I would love to hear more about it, so South Texas… 😉
I know that my first trad harvest will absolutely pale in comparison to either of my children’s first. So like ST said: enjoy the pictures. Oh, and I’d like to be the first to say: Great Job Layla! 😛 A start of many more adventures, I’m sure.

I started my daughter shooting a longbow about 2 years ago. She’d taken a interest from seeing me practice out in the back yard. Well after watching Masters of the bare bow several times and writing down the rules to shooting the longbow and placing them on her wall..a huntress was born. We’ve been on several trips and this Laredo trip was the one that I will carry with me all my days. (We came up on these Javi’s and had to sneak in quietly. Once we were close enough for a shot we were ducking behind a fallen Mesquite tree. 2 of the Javi’s had spotted movement but the wind was in our favor. They were a little skittish at first then finally one came in within shooting range, it spotted her and she stood motionless for about 5 minutes. This went on for awhile and the Javi turned broadside. She looks at me excited and barely able to speak. I had asked her if she was ready and she whispered, I an do this. She raised her bow and I could see that her blood was pumping hard, her bow wasn’t steady. I told her to go through the steps in her head and let it fly. She found her composure and raised her bow again, she drew and lowered her bow after she anchored and released. Brother It seemed like time had stopped as the arrow took flight. Her arrow took hit her target and the Javi took off running. We both were quiet and listened…..The Javi darted off and we heard it hit the ground shortly after. I hugged my daughter so tight and she was proud of her accomplishment. She knew she had made daddy proud. We tracked it and she found her arrow. I pointed out to her that there were air bubble on the broken shaft and that it was a perfect lung shot. 15 yds later we found her kill. You can tell by the smile on her face that she was happy. She was bowhunting way before trad archery was even cool with our youth of today. She’s not Katniss, she’s my daughter and I’m Darn proud of her. The good lord chose to give me a girl and he gave me a friend a Daughter and a hunting partner for life. Thanks for the nice comments folks..Thanks for the posting Alex……
