There was a good thread about 4×3″ fletched arrows here awhile back that I’m currently unable to find. So I’ll start a new thread.
I’ve been using some 4×3″ fletched arrows for a couple months now and it seems to me that the fletching tends to wear out quicker than 3×5″. Has anyone had the same experience?
I have a hunch that it’s my particular setup. I chop my own 5″ fletching from full length feathers and save the scraps (where the quill becomes thin) for my kids’ 3″ fletching. I used the same “iffy” feather scraps to make 3″ fletching for my own arrows. The kids’ low poundage bows haven’t had any ill effect on the fletching but my 60 pounder is pretty tough on them.
Thoughts?

I started using some 4x3s and they seem to hold up fine. Sometimes I wonder if the tops of the larger feathers start to wear quicker. I’m still using some 3 x 4 ” along with the 4 x 3″ and they land right along side each other. dwc

I recently switced, last summer, and love ’em. While I haven’t shot any of the 4×3 arrows enough times to likely encounter wear, it stands to logic that because they are less high, the have more clearance or rather less pressure and friction against the back plate, and so should last longer. Also because they not as high, they should be stiffer and more bristly and thus, you’d think, longer-lasting. If you are finding excess wear, I agree that it’s likely a clearance problem with your bow. Do you have them set at 90-degree intervals? That seems to be an excellent angle of feathers against back. Or you could have some lame feathers?

Here is what I had about 4X2″. Not sure if that’s what you were thinking of. Hope it helps. Be well.
