I’m about to take the plunge and build a takedown longbow with a sleeve. What sleeve type(s) do you favor, and why? Any construction tips or links to the same would be appreciated.

I’m toying with the idea of using carbon fiber cloth and epoxy, ala the fiberglass sleeves I’ve seen described. Anyone ever done it, thought about it, or recoiled in horror at the notion?

Charles, I haven’t looked into this in a few years, but there was always just one type sleeve–brass male and steel female–so far as I know. I don’t even think it has a name brand but most trad archer places sell it, and Dave Doran’s Archery Past is my go-to choice for such. There are three sizes and two shapes, as I recall. I tried them all and found the oval unsatisfactory to the type handles I was building into my bows, and the large D sleeve too big. The small D works for most wood bows. Only problem I had with them, a consistent problem, was that the sleeve fit into the socket side too tight. On every one I had to sand the male brass insert down for a snug but not impossible fit. Beyond that I never had one fail … naturally, the wood will fail first. A glass sleeve of the same type would be lighter, and you could possibly make it yourself, but it wouldn’t be as strong unless it was really beefy. Excuse me if I’ve misinterpreted what you want … just trying to offer what I can until someone more knowledgeable shows up.

Thanks for the info. Two Osage staves are on their way to me, and I’ve spent the better part of the day researching sleeve construction.

I’ve pretty much settled on composite carbon and fiberglass with epoxy for the sleeve construction. I’m very familiar with epoxy from building a kayak two years ago, and I’ve found some great online resources for carbon sleeve design and construction. Once the leather grip cover is in place, ’tain’t nobody gonna know what lurks beneath when I’m shooting my “trad” bow. I’ll just have to assemble it under cover of darkness. 😉

Big Jim of Big Jim’s archery did a long video tutorial on making the carbon sleeves. I expect you’ve already watched it if you’ve done a bunch of research. But I thought it was a good one. I think there is a link on his website.

Thanks, Steve. I have indeed watched the first two segments of the video, which helped convince me to go that route. I’ll post a link here later today for the benefit of others.

I spent a few weeks this fall in hazmat garb, including a full mask, while refinishing our log home. At least I won’t need the 35 foot manlift for this job …

I built a few with carbon/glass sleeve. They came out fine. The first one was a little rough getting apart.
