Went to a local Archery Shop and 3d range tonight and shot a nice 3d course with my son. For a small fee of $5.00 you can shoot a 20 target course. They have 2 separate courses one on each side of the blacktop country road. The course we shot tonight ran thru fields and a wooded ravine and was great practice but we shot from our own chosen positions rather than from the marked stakes. The other course has a large tree stand from which you shot at 4 or 5 targets. We will try it another evening. When I paid at the pro shop I was a little surprised to find only compounds and some crossbows on display……because this location called Golden Grain Archery has trained many olympic hopefuls including a local shooter Rodney White who medaled in the Olympics a few years ago. They did have one good looking recurve hanging by itself in the corner with a $199.00 price on it. I think it was an import, maybe a Samick…..and I know they sell Hoyt competition recurves for Olympic hopefuls……but I guess that shows you how out of touch I am with todays archery market. Even our successful Olympic shooters like Rodney tend to pick up a compound and go for those endorsement $$$$ and shops that sell Traditional equipment are very hard to find. The great thing about Golden Grain Archery is that these 3d ranges are open for shooting at all times. They have a drop box on the front of the building which you put your $5.00 in and sign a sheet……so even if Traditional shooters are a rarity in this area 3d courses are available to practice our skills and during the week or on evenings you seldom run into other shooters.

Sounds like a nice course. I know of a local coach who has sent his high school team to championships, but turns to the compound bow for hunting. To each his own, as long as the ethics are in place, which I’m sure of with this particular fellow. dwc

YES , Rodney is a local hero and well deserved with a local park named for him. Compound hunters make up the majority of shooters and hunters now and whether we like it or not have been instrumental in the obtaining of our longer seasons and the gratification of the sport. I guess we are all brothers in archery and in the hunt.
