DP note: Filmmaker Christopher Daley just posted this update to The Good Hunt website. Since I get a regular flow on inquiries from tradbow members (three in one day recently) and so many of you have generously contributed to the crowd funding, I’m posting the update here FYI:
Dear friends and supporters of The Good Hunt,
It’s been a while since I’ve been in touch, and an update on The Good Hunt is overdue. The summer has flown by. I have been working on this project as much as possible, but I’ve had to squeeze it in between other jobs. If slowly, the editing has moved along and three weeks ago I finished a second cut of the film, which is now about 80 minutes long. I think the editing, not including sound mixing and image correction, is about 75% completed. There is still some serious nipping and tucking to do and some tough creative decisions to be made, but the material is all on the table. The duration of the film will likely go back down a bit in the final stage.
At this point I’ve started showing the film to some producers and colleagues and the reactions so far have been encouraging across the board. Far less unanimous is the advice I get on how to tie together the last strings. So right now I am taking all this information into account, looking for an editor I can work with for a few weeks to wrap things up and looking for the funds to get this all done.
All of this is taking much more time than any previous film project, but having come this far and with results this good to date, it would be folly to hurry things now and end up with a film that is less than it could be. I do hope I can have the film done early next year and will continue to keep you in the loop. Thanks again for your support and patience.
All the best from Brussels,
Christopher
DP note: A primary reason the post-production is taking so long is that Christopher and I determined from the start to accept zero corporate sponsorships, which put the project on a shoestring from start. But it’s a clean and ethical shoestring and your patience is mucho appreciated. The film will be shown at the BHA national rendezvous in Denver in March, the first public showing in the U.S., and will likely be available on DVD to contributors before that. Aside from the main film that Christopher speaks of as something over an hour, there are several extras. Dave

Dave (& everyone)
Really impressive the clips/outtakes etc on The Good Hunt website. I for one am not only very excited to see the film but feel immensely proud that, in some small way, I (along with a host of our Trad brothers and sisters) am able to contribute to the project. I did email Chris through the site that I will certainly try to pony up a few more $$ for the cause 😀
Can’t wait to see it finished !

Kirk– Not a public theater, but as part of the rendezvous activities at the rendezvous site. That’s all I know–that the producer has agreed to let it be shown there even if it’s not yet commercially available. I really know little about that end of things, just being the pretty (camo striped) face. 😆

Kirk and Mike — I just talked with BHA national and they are doing a major upgrade of the website (much needed!) that could be done by next week and will contain what info is available on the 2014 rendezvous, then upgrade it as things finalize. They will let me know when it’s ready, and I’ll let you know. For now, all I can say is that it will be in Denver in March. Details such as speakers, programs, etc. have yet to be decided. Clay Hayes’ film is supposed to ready by spring also, and though this is purely off the cuff, I assume it may also be shown there since he’s closely associated with BHA. Thanks for your interest in the film and the rendezvous. Dave

Hi!
Usually I skip all films about hunting – somehow I think, that the process how a “good hunt” is made is too complicated to show in a film – more easy to show the obvious elements – the chase and the kill – not for me.
But here I think is something to wait – expectations are high – now I can see the Elkheart himself walking the walk and talking the talk 😀

November 18, 2013 at 1:08 pmPost count: 124For those interested, the link to the BHA Rendezvous in Denver this coming March (March 21-23, 2014) is here: http://backcountryhunters.org/index.php/component/content/article/12-outreach/national/327-backcountry-hunters-a-anglers-host-2013-north-american-rendezvous-in-boise-idaho
Disregard the 2013 and Boise components of the web address, the link is correct to 2014 and Denver.
I, for one, am very much looking forward to viewing this in March.
