HELENA, Mont. (AP) — The bill to allow a small group of enthusiasts to hunt with spears has been stopped in the House.
The measure targeted at a subgroup of hunters who hunt like prehistoric man for sport was tabled in the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks committee Friday.
The bill, which had already passed through the Senate, drew a large amount of public interest because of its unusual topic. Gov. Brian Schweitzer singled out the spear hunting measure as a “kooky” proposal from tea party conservatives that hold sway in the Legislature.
Hunters supporting the bill say it’s an exciting sport that connects them with the outdoors.
Critics of the proposal say there is no need for the legislation and that spear hunting could be used for poaching.
What? Poaching? Tea Party?
Good Grief! -
LOL, yeah if I wanted to poach, I would carry a spear:roll:
There was an article years ago about a guy here in MI who hunted bears with a spear. I know people who take hogs with a big knife, so where is a spear different?
BTW- on the other extreme, I read an article where a guy used a homemade Civil War cannon to hunt deer:shock: -
Damn. This doesn’t help my cause for getting an atlatl season started in Idaho…

Spears! Wow! I thought getting within 20 yards was tricky, hate to think how long it would take to bag a Whitetail with one of those.
On another note I have never seen anything in the Alberta regs saying you can’t hunt with a spear. I wonder if this means that I could? Might have to ask the local ASRD. -
Would ‘spear season’ require wearing a blaze orange loincloth?

I propose a year round stick and stone season. If your weapons are made by you from sticks, stones, bone, hide, etc. then you’re good to go:D OK, maybe we’ll lay off for a few weeks durring calving season:wink:

That would be fine but then somebody would re-invent the stone- put sights on them, make them out of graphite, sell accessories…:?

Not a bad idea. There should be no season for this. You could just hunt this way anytime since it is so hard to do most people would not even try so the impact on game would be minimal and look, poachers are going to poach no matter what the season so that is a ridiculous reason not to allow hunting. All natural materials, all made by you, no season, hunt when you want to. Sounds reasonable to me.

I have seen videos of guys in trees about 10 feet above a bait pile with a long handled spear. Th Bear comes in, the guy almost touches the bear with the spear an “Gigs” the bear with the long handle. Seen one guy kill a Buffer on UTUBE with a thrown spear. I would much rather use a Bow!:)
