My loving wife has finally givin in to the fact that I am a hunter and that means that after her and our young daughter longbow hunting is my passion. Being the wonderful women she is, she has offered to send me on an Alaskan or BC hunt for my birthday. Our problem now is we have no idea where to start. Any advise or suggestions of a guide to use would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everybody. Drew in NM.

An excellent source of on-the-ground info on Alaska hunting (in addition to input from certain busy members of this forum) is the Alaska Outdoors Forums. I’d take a look first at their excellent Hunt Planning Primer and then explore their forums from there.

I’ve been there several times and my advice is to try and find a friend to go with you and do a fly-in, self-guided drop camp. Or better yet a float hunt, where they drop you upstream and you take as long as you like to float down for the pickup. The Moose John is famous for this but IMHO over-hunted. Just check and double-triple check any outfitter, guide, or flying service before booking. Trust me, it’s even more important in AK than the lowr 48. And for the money and odds of bring home the meat and horns, I recommend caribou over moose.

The aforementioned forums include one specifically dedicated to Float Hunting. The forum owner (for the entire Alaska Outdoors Forum site) has published what is probably the definitive book on the subject: Float Hunting Alaska’s Wild Rivers. I believe he has a DVD out, and I think he’s started to do online seminars on the subject as well.

Thank you Mr. Petersen for your sound advice and response to my question. A drop in or float, self guided hunt is exactly what I had in mind. If you have a favored pilot or buisness or someone you think would work well with this first timer to AK my email is denisondrew@gmail.com. Thank you so much for your time. Also, I have no traditional hunters in my small town of Roswell New Mexico to journey north with me. Wanna head north for one more trip? Hahaha.

                Thanks, Drew

The float hunting forum is great. Now I have to read the book 🙂 Up for a trip north for a self guided carIbou hunt?
