Note – I’m not posting this to create any negativity at all, just curious to hear if my experience is unique;
I sent Idaho Traditional Bowhunters a membership check back in Feb, and by April I still hadn’t heard anything back from them, and noticed my check had never been cashed. I sent an e-mail to the treasurer, and he assured me that they had my check and that it would be deposited soon.
It’s now late June, and they never cashed my check and I’ve never received any membership info (or anything) from them. I finally e-mailed them again several days ago to ask what the heck’s going on, and haven’t received a reply.
Are these folks still a functioning group?

Well, any way you look at it, it’s not a good way to grow your membership. I’ve found in the past that while most volunteer-run organizations function quiete well, still, they are dependant on volunteers with little or no quality control. The magazine folks are gone to Compton, but should have good knowledge of that home-state group.
And remind us — are you the chairman of ID BHA? Seems you mentioned being involved with that good group.

Yeah, I figured that it’s a pretty homegrown, volunteer-run organization, but still – 5 mos. and nothing at all seems kind of weird. I’d still like to support them and all, but it hasn’t exactly left a good first impression.

No, not at all, just a member who really believes in their mission.

As far as I know they are still an active group. I am not involved with their Board but I’ll ask around.
I know that volunteer groups are not always timely about processing checks, but 5 months is a bit extreme. 😯

I will cash it the day I receive it so feel free to mail as many as you like!!!:P

I do have experience with the group (Idaho State Bowhunters) dating back several years. I joined for the first time in Ought Six, and received a membership packet, a couple of stickers that I displayed proudly on my Ford, and enjoyed the occasional newsletter. Because I hunt exclusively in Idaho, I felt it was a group that I had some affinity with – despite being a non-resident from (of all places) Kalifornia. Here is their website: http://www.idahostatebowhunters.org/
The next year or two were weird though, and I later came to find out that the then treasurer absconded with funds and there was quite a row, including legal action.
However, the group has since recovered and is back on track as far as I know. They have a great website and great programs.

That is a different group entirely. Idaho State Bowhunters is the mixed modern and trad group. Smithhammer was referring to the Idaho Traditional Bowhunters.

Will do. Let me know if you haven’t received it half a year from now.

Hey Bruce — I don’t recall giving you permission to use that picture of me back when I was drinking! 😛

I thought it would be ok since most of your face was covered. I mean really, that could just be any ol’ monkey, no?

ITB are very active but also pretty low key. I see a bunch of the guys at the ISB jam in July in Stanley. I will put a bug in their ear. I will see black chicken and hand him $10 cash and I am in. You can shoot them a e-mail and they are pretty good about getting back to you.

Update – still haven’t heard a thing back from these folks, even after sending a follow-up e-mail to the Treasurer in June, asking why my check had never been cashed, and why I had never heard anything from them. No response at all. At this point, I think I’m just glad they didn’t cash my check.
This just reinforces my belief that I would never want to belong to club that would have a guy like me as a member…

Yeah, me too; join the club …

Now that’s a club I could be a part of. Wait. No. Oh, nevermind…

Over the years I’ve been an officer in several state and local bowhunting organizations. The trouble with amateur organizations is that they are run by amateurs (like me). All have their problems, the as 10% of the members who do 90% of the work lose interest or move on. Sure the situation is frustrating, but I’d give you the same reply I gave people when I received complaints as a club officer: “Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We’d be happy to have you volunteer to take over that job.”

I hear what you’re saying, Don. I’ve been involved in non-profits and small organizations nearly all my life, and I know how it is (or at least how it can be). But still – 7 months? That’s a little more than I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt on.
-
Of course the situation you describe is ridiculous, but the fact remains that it’s a volunteer organization that isn’t working right because it doesn’t have the right volunteers, and there’s only one way to fix that. BTW, I’ve spoken to this group at two of their banquets and always find its members to be great folks. I am sorry to hear the organization seems to be floundering. Hopefully, a member who is following this thread can jump in and address the situation. Don
