Here’s the deal: I’ve been fortunate to get invited on a deer hunt in Michigan in December (I live in Texas), and am in the market for a take-down longbow for this trip and hopefully more in the future.
So what are some of your favorites? Any in particular to stay away from? Thanks for the help

I shoot a fedora extreme 3 pice take down and love it smooth and no hand shock

We have a lot of great boywers here in Michigan that would love to help you out. Personally the Shrew Classic Hunter is the best bow I have ever owned or shot. I also highly recomend the Northern Mist Superior or Baraga. Some of the prettest longbows you buy are made by St Joe River bows. Good luck with your search.

Why look outside your own home state? There are several good bowyers right there in TX. Bob Lee and Roy Hall are just acouple of them.

I second Anointed on the Shrew CH, but the waiting list is a year and a half long, ugh. Rare to see used ones on the market and most often they’re left-handed. I personally prefer two-piece take-downs to get away from the massive handle section, though they don’t get as short for travel as a three-piece. But I shoot a 54″ so it fits fine in baggage or backpack. SO many good ones to choose from, what you’re likely to get here, and are getting so far, are our personal favorites. There are simply too many good bows, and too many personal preferences, for any one to be “best.” I will suggest however that you buy a “custom” from an individual bowyer or small outfit and avoid the big factory names. IMHO.

If you get down to Austin, get in touch with Bob Sarrels, he makes a good bow and has several in stock bows ready to go. You can drop by and shoot several and see which one fits your needs. I shoot one of his recurves. His web site is sarrelsarchery.com

I have two takedown Longbows by Black Widow. Their locket socket design is as good as it gets…I love mine and would love to own a couple more. Great bows, quiet, forgiving, and tough as nails. The pic is not my bow but what a beauty. Gotta love the Beaver tail wrap.

That bow is a looker! The beaver tail is unique, good idea!
I ended up getting a Rat’ler T/D longbow from Diamondback Archery. It’s the standard 3-piece limb-bolt style take down, 48#@28″, 66″ long. I was checking E-bay and this bow was listed for $350, the list price is $650, I don’t know why James Greenway from Diamondback wanted to let it go so cheap, but it showed up a week later and I couldn’t be happier with it! It’s pretty, draws smooth, and shoots right where ya look, thanks for all the suggestions!
