I was just wondering if this would be a good starting point. I pull about 28 1/4″ on my 50# @ 28″ bow. I have some .400 arrows cut to 29″ with 5″ feathers. I am putting 200 grain tips on there. Is this a suitable starting point for a higher FOC arrow? I’m not going for the super EFOC yet, just starting here. I’m still waiting on the heavy tips to get in, I was just wondering where I should place my expectations. Thanks for the help and advice!

            Here’s a link to Troy’s EFOC/Ultra-EFOC tuning article.

            http://www.tuffhead.com/education/tuning%20the%20efoc%20shaft.html

I have not used it but am told Stu’s calculator is not extremely accurate when dealing with EFOC and Ultra-EFOC arrows.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Troy doesn’t show up soon to give you some input too … unless he’s out hunting!

200 up front is a great starting point. Just do your tuning slow and steady. Once you have the field points properly tuned you may find that 5″ feather aren’t really needed. When I started upping point weight in my effert to work into the higher FOC’s I found that longer and higher cut feathers were really counter productive.

Thanks for all of the help. For backround, I am in a way “making lemonade” at this point. See, I have some 5575’s cut to 29″ that I’m shooting out of my bow. I can’t get new arrows right now, so I’m working to get them good with an added benefit of a heavy front end. I have been able to get them flying ok with 125 grain tips, (I know, should be over spined, but the proof is before my eyes.) How I did this was to up my brace height to 8″ (right at the high end of whats recommended, but within tolerance), work my release technique (learned to let the string pull away once anchor was achieved rather than “dumping” the string). I also took a different grip where I didn’t “grasp” the handle fully but rather slid the tips closer to the front. All combined, this has me just slightly over on spine. But it gives me an opportunity to beef my front up some and shoot a good, heavy arrow. Not a telephone pole, but solid. My arrows fly good, but seem to correct paradox quickly. My guess is another 75 grains up front will bring me in pretty close to spine and weight. Just a guess at this point though.
