Good luck to all of you during the upcoming Elk season. I will keep in mind the helpful hints that many of you have posted and apply my own experiences to help make this another sucessful season. Have a safe one.

Good luck to you, too, Bill. The CO seasons open tomorrow. I head to “deer camp” (the back of my pickup) this afternoon. There are elk up there also, but I really enjoy chasing those big bucks who look like 5×5 elk and run in bunches this time of year near timberline. The elk will start singing in a week or so and then all else is forgot and I have to fight the urge to urinate on myself and roll in the mud. 😛 One friend backpacked into the wilderness yesterday. Two more have their two-tent camp all set up and went in last night for no good reason other than “we can’t wait.” It’s all fun. dave

Good luck to you too, Dave, those deer are very challenging! I’m sure you’re suffering from the same symptoms that all of us Elk hunters exhibit at this time of year; anxiousness, irritability, acute auditory, visual and olfactory hypersense! The only antidote is getting out there and exercising those senses to the max!
Nutmeg, you Texans have so many animals there it’s probably a good thing that Elk don’t live there too, your human population would explode. Good luck to all.

I also enjoy chasing the mulies around. I shot a buck a few years back that was 265 dressed. They estimated the live weight to be around 325. Now that was a big boy! What area of the state do you hunt Dave?

This time of year, heck any time of year I have trouble, not hunting elk. Here in Oregon, our bear season starts Aug. 1st;Bow season starts the 28th. Ill be darned if I couldn’t get myself to quit looking for elk and sign, and start hunting bears! Seemed like every move I made while “Bear Hunting” turned into a Elk scouting trip! I just love chasin them critters! Good Luck Everyone!

Actually, I’ve looked into elk hunting in Texas, and it does exist. WAYYYY over on the west edge of Texas against New Mexico, up in the mountains that I never knew Texas had. I think pretty much all of it is private land hunting, and many of the elk that are there are remnants of elk that were released several years ago, but I’m sure that there is a now “native” population as well, as it’s been several years since the first ones were released. But, as most private Texas hunting is, I’m sure it costs a pretty penny to hunt those elk. And ya know the kicker? Texas Fish and Game does not recognize their elk to be among their game species, so any “book-class” bulls that are shot cannot be submitted to the record books. Ain’t that just a bugger!! But, there’s still elk hunting. Good luck to everybody that has upcoming opening day archery hunts planned. Myself, I’ll be grocery shopping with the family at the local Farmer’s Market. LOL!!!

                          Michael.
