By the time I’m at the Point of Purchase I’ve already done a runnin ton of reviewing a product I THINK I might like… so not all that much do I read on line reviews, except on sites like this, which often LEADS to an interest to do more reviewing and learning.

Opinions are like body parts… everyone, as you recognize, has their own criteria, prejudices and reasons for same.

Without the entire picture, it’s hard to weight input from strangers, especially in a vacuum on a website selling said same product.

Even facebook I’m told (don’t go there) a vendor can set it up to NOT ALLOW a negative feedback…so what’s the point?

I find reviews very useful. Sure, there are some that are obviously worthless, but when I look at an item that has possibly hundreds of reviews, and I see what the overall rating is, and I can quickly scan both the most positive and the most negative reviews, I feel like I can get a much better sense of what I’m really ordering than if I just do so blind.

I also find reviews on forums like this to be even more useful than on merchant sites. There’s more opportunity to go into detail, provide pics of the product in use, respond to questions, etc.

People can pine for the ‘good ol days’ (and I do the same myself sometimes), but the ability to share information in these ways isn’t a bad thing at all, imo.

I give way more weight to things on archery sites or other sites specific to items I want to consider purchasing than on as you said so aptly, “Merchant sites”.

I’m constantly amazed at this internet. Today I found a utube showing me how to wire in a hot receptacle from a light switch. I’ve been saving videos on tying my favorite flies.

So not only archery, but every day living and other hobbies come to life here.

I just tend to like to do point-counter point with a past user 1:1 if it’s a higher ticket item to check it out…

You said it well about this and like sites of special interest showing so much more depth and there can be 2-way communication regarding various aspects. i just don’t bother much with merchant site stuff…people complain for how it was shipped, that has little to do with the product… and vice versa!

Everyone above covered all my thoughts on reviews. Reviews, like those Smithhammer does, are incredibly helpful. My review of the reviews I read on Amazon.com (as an example), would reult in three stars. You have to sift through a bunch of useless bs, but in the end, it’s better to have them than not.

I look at the reviews and if I do not see anything on there that looks like a honest critique then I start digging deeper. It is impossible to please everyone. That is way I try to sift out the manufacture hype.

I find reviews from bloggers, hobbyists AND professional most helpful when they provide a “review policy”. Many of the fly fishing blogs I follow specifically state that they do not do negative reviews. So whatever the review, they are reviewing it b/c they like and endorse the product, equipment, book or whatever it is.

For merchant reviews it’s tough, if there are a lot of reviews, and they are overwhelmingly in favor of the product, then I have a tendency to look at the handful of negative reviews. It seems to me that for outdoors/sporting goods products, those people that really put a piece of equipment through it’s paces tend to post more moderately or low rated reviews, even if their text suggests that they actually like the product. These reviews are much more insightful pro’s vs. con’s and tend to look at the relationship of cost of a product to it’s durability, longevity and overall longterm value.

Our opening day of trout is the 18th of April. My daughter and I camp out and fish opening day the last 2 years. Kind of a tradition.I want to enjoy the outdoors with her before she gets in her teens and does not think I am cool anymore!:cry:
