Will the serving on a b50 last longer than a d97? Seems like the serving on my d97 strings don’t last very long.I have been re-serving them with dental floss lately.I’m pulling 60# on my bow and would I be losing much performance if I switched? Any thoughts?

I figured if I waited there’d be all sorts of replies to this, so I worked in garden for the past 7 hrs!
I learned a few things about strings over the past 2 yrs, but not that question.
I ordered various D10, D97, etc modern material strings for various bows… they all had creep…which b50 and it’s prodigy are known for.
I dislike it… I always ordered strings in pairs, I’d shoot them both “in” put silencers on each, then put one away in my archery vest for safe keeping or that eventful time you fray or nick on.
What I found re: serving was that some fit my nocks—some didn’t! WT? Same material, same serving material… so I checked how Flemish strings are made… most guys twist them up in front of the TV—which is fine, if you don’t w ant them to be consistent.
I found a guy that makes strings for Centaur bows… Rick Barbee. He uses ONE material… learns it’s characteristics, is very picky about your length measurements and how measured, then builds strings under consistent tension, then used harmonics to settle all the strands into one another, then serves under tension.
My two strings were 1/4″ shy of desired brace… in 15 min strung with about a half dozen PULLS (not shots) on the string, it settled in and I left it strung (per bowyer recommendation) for a month and it never changed!!!
All other strings I have had, changed brace in hot weather or whatever… due to the lack of tension and consistency in fabrication i guess.
My servings have been on for years…
Did you check our nocks for any sharp mold marks? I sand mine slightly to get the fit I want (stays on pointed down with heavy arrow but a VERY light tap and it falls off!)
Good luck!

Your question implies that you think there is something different between the serving material on the two strings. In fact, the material used to serve a string has nothing to do with the string material itself.
The wear pattern on the serving can tell you a story about what is happening when you shoot. You didn’t mention where the serving is wearing out: At the nocking point? below where you grab the string?
In general, nylon serving wears out the fastest, but is by far the cheapest. I have tried several of the more expensive servings with mixed results. The best I have found so far is the BCY Halo serving. It has lasted the best by far.
I have not tried the fast flight serving, but I suspect it will last well too.

Steve,I’m getting the serving to unravel at the nock.I shoot three under and filed my nocks to were I can tap them off the string.Perhaps their still too tight.I really need to learn to twist up a string but I haven’t made it there yet.

I recently (last year or so) learned that there is a correct way to wrap for right hand shooters so that you’re NOT going against the “grain” (direction of wrap) when you pull and loose the arrow.
I also gave up on brass pinch on nocks…went to adjustable tie on nocks and by doing both, stopped having the unraveling occur…fwiw.

Doc,I done the tie on nock but mine came out fuglier than a booger!Another thing I need to work on!

Took me several tries, too… using big string to practice it.
Send me an email and I’ll send you a link I use to do them…not sure it’s ok to post an external link here…
That having the serving going in the direction you’re drawing is HUGE too!
Otherwise, your finger pressure is unscrewing it every shot!

Here’s a link to our tip on serving a bowstring so it doesn’t come unraveled. Coming Unraveled
External links are okay if they are to a YouTube video or an instructional site. I’d just prefer to not have links to other forum discussions. You could also send that link in a Private Message.
Thanks!

I think Doc has already spoken to this, but it looks like a simple case of unravelling. As others have said, it happens when the serving is put on backwards, and is loose to start with. No cure but to re-serve the string…
