I couldn’t help myself this morning and just had to try out the two cedars I made up, even though I wasn’t too happy with my attempt at straightening the arrows or putting the tips on straight. This was the first time I’ve EVER shot more than just a single wood arrow at a target…again that was…ever! It was only 10 yards, but what a good way to start that journey!

They usually go where you are looking, even if they aren’t perfectly straight…..something a tubular arrow won’t do.
Keep at it Patrick….that’s a great start. -
Patrick — if you’re buying shafts from a good supplier, you shouldn’t have many that need straightening. If you’re buying finished arrows from a good arrowsmith, there should be none that aren’t dead straight (at first, at least). But looks like you have enough feathers on there to cure most all ills, and are doing your best to get a Robin Hood so you have an excuse to make more arrows, or buy more as the case may be. Fun, ain’t it? Dave

I was going to be buying some from Rick at The Feathered Shaft, but he didn’t have any “ready-to-fletch shafts” at the Great Lakes Longbow Invitational. Instead, I found some super cheap shafts from Lost Nation (they’re 2nd’s) there, and I figured they’d give me some practice straightening and tapering. I’d rather ruin these than some pricy shafts, and if they don’t work out, I’ll just turn them into flu-flus. I really do like using wood arrows! It’s very satisfying.

Careful there fellow, that is some tight shooting and awful close to busting a pretty new arrow 😯

BRUC wrote: I like the four fletch and really nice color on the shafts! One-quarter of an inch higher and you would have been less an arrow:) What’s the backstop made of:?:
BruceThanks. I tapered, fletched, nocked, and installed the points, but Lost Nation Archery stained and sealed shafts.
The backstop is called “The Block”. It’s a large block of “foam” like layers. Our local club uses them. Picture’s worth a thousand words:

Well, Congratrulations, Patrick! There is no going back now.
Glad to see you making your own. Any archery is satisfying, but when you put more of yourself into it, the personal satisfaction really swells. Just wait until you are standing over a critter that fell to your self made arrow.

Good shooting there!

Wood arrows will get you ” hooked”. If the urge to return to carbon or aluminum should persist, try bamboo or cane shafts. There is something truly magical about the feel of wood or arrow materials provided by nature through the entire process of preparation – from the shaping, straightening, sanding and shooting. Enjoy the experience.

Question… I like the finish on those arrows. What did you use (spur, poly, lacquer?) and how many coats did you apply?
I bought em with the finish already completed. Lost Nation Archery did the finish.

I will eventually do my own finish too, but I didn’t have the cash to get what I needed. Plus the unfinished shafts were not 11/32, and I don’t want to buy different size tips and taper tool.
