I’ve got a Grayling Bear Grizzly (nearest I can find, early ’70’s model). AMO 56, 45#. Problem I’m running into is finding the correct brace height.

Measuring to the deepest part of the grip, the brace height is just at 9 1/4″. Anyone know what the brace height is supposed to be, that seems on the high end to me.

I don’t honestly know but I would think that is high . I would think 8 to 8 3/4. Someone here surely would know.

OK, another question. This bow uses Dacron strings, do I get a longer string and twist to get my brace height? My other bow (longbow) uses FF strings and I’ve had good luck twisting/untwisting to get proper brace height. Just don’t know if it works same way with Dacron, I’m assuming it would.

My Griz like yours is early 70’s, can’t determine exactly cause medallion is gold or silver depending on what the lighting is. I do know that it’s marked 45# on the limbs and also under the side plate but it actually scales out to be 49# @ 28″.

Now for brace height, I fought and fought and fought to get good arrow flight and was getting ticked at all the info I found and whatnot. I finally twisted my string up until the string was barely touching the bottom of the string groves at the limb ends and BINGO! Beautiful arrow flight with about every arrow spine, weight, type, whatever I have. That translates out to be 8 1/8″ from back of riser and 9 1/8″ from deepest part of riser. I mostly shoot long bows now but I grew up with recurves and if there was a whole bunch of string laying in the string groves, the brace height was too low for me. To me, and what do I know sometimes, a shorter bow like these, 58″, is going to have a bit of a higher brace height but I’m sure that may not be so for everyone.

I make 54″ Dacron strings and they work fine. They’ll “stretch” more than the Fast Flite you’re used too but twist’er up and go on.

Said and done, if it’s shooting good for you, go for it.

I just noticed you said 56″AMO, whereas mine is 58″. You would need 52″ string.

I have a list that gives the brace heights of Bear Bows.

It lists the Grizzly at 58″ It gives a brace height of 7.5″ – 8.5″. Even if yours is an earlier one, I’d start at the recommended height.

I just checked my Grizzly. It’s a 56″ AMO 53lb @ 28, I actually draw 29″. My brace height after shooting 5 arrows to settle the string is 7-3/4″. It shoots very well at this height & is QUIET.

I use a B-50 string, I would never use FF on an older Bear.

                    Hope this helps some.

Enjoy that Bear, I think they are great bows.

                    Frank

Thanks everyone for the help! I’ve gotten a B50 Flemish string (ordered 53″ instead of 52″) in order to get a smaller brace height. Starting around 7 3/4″ and go from there. It does draw easier at 7 3/4″ over the 9″+.
