I would like your opinion on something. Up until now I have only supported my provincial traditional organisation the ATBA (Alberta Traditional Bowhunters Association). And while I find them a worthy cause, our membership numbers and events are not going to make a noticeable effect on the minds of those who decide political policies concerning land use, seasons, and other issues relevant to the traditional bowhunter. So I was hoping to support another traditional organisation with a louder voice, and a voice that is heard in Canada. I plan on doing some research on-line, but I would also like your opinions. After all it is the members that make an organisation, so I think your opinions would say far more than any webpage.
So any suggestions? -
This could get to be a touchy topic… But I’ll go ahead and jump in 😀
Here in the US, as the economy goes from bad to worse, the answer seems to be to reduce education and emaciate the environment. The clean water act and the clean air act are under threat at the state and federal level. Here in NC the legislature just repealed all the state level clean water legislation that had been on the books for decades.
And it’s hard to know what you might think is “relevant to the traditional bowhunter”. And it is hard to think of any organization that has had much success on a national or continental level.
Be that as it may, here is my suggestion : the Aldo Leopold Foundation.

Thank you for your input Mr Graf. And what I meant when I said “relevant to the traditional bowhunter” were things like combating ORV abuse, the protection of public lands and the creation of more primitive seasons.
I hadn’t heard of the Aldo Leopold Foundation until your post. Thank you for the suggestion. -

I hadn’t heard of the Aldo Leopold Foundation until your post. Thank you for the suggestion. If ORV abuse and public land protection are priorities for you, I would highly recommend supporting Backcountry Hunters and Anglers. Those two issues in particular are central to their work.
Though the Aldo Leopold Foundation is certainly worthy as well, as is the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership.

Thanks for the reply Smithhammer. I was looking into the Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, but I saw no mention of Canada in their webpage.
Do they operate in Canada as well? -
Sorry, ‘swchein – I missed the fact that you’re in Canada. Not really sure what organizations would be doing something similar up there, but if you find out, I’d be curious to hear.

Yah Canada seems to have a bit of a void when it comes to anything like a traditional organisation. Perhaps Ducks Unlimited might be the closest thing, but I also want any funds to support traditional archery if possible.

I hear you. My wife is Canadian, and we lived in Yukon for a bit after we got married. May still back there someday, so yeah, I’d be curious what you find. Maybe one needs to be started?

I would have to ask. Where do you feel you can contribute most? Or want to focus on most? That’s the main thing.
I’m not big on politics, and shy away from funding fancy $600 dollar suited lobbyist.
I like Compton’s Traditional Bowhunters – simply put. They are the future. With the strongest support for Youth programs. The youth are our future. Anyone with a stick and string in their hand really needs to look a Compton very seriously.

I checked in with BHA. The organization only has a few Canadian members and no chapters currently, but we’d all like to see that change. It is, after all, the North American Model of Wildlife Management… Waterfowl groups have been way ahead of the curve on this, for obvious reasons, and DU is just as strong in Canada as it is south of the border. Anyway, I’d suggest visiting the BHA website http://www.backcountryhunters.org Although it’s not focused on any particular method of hunting or fishing, it’s a great organization that represents all of us who care about hunting and fishing in wild places. Others I’d suggest: TRCP, PBS Don
