        I was wanting 50-52 pounds. It came in at 48 pounds. I will probably build me another one 60 inches 48 pounds. Ziricote and black and white ebony. Two of my fav woods. Just a simple hunting bow nothing fancy about this one. 6 coats of thunderbird finish. Ready for Wyoming elk this fall.

            That’s a beauty! I really like the “smoky” looking grain on the limbs. Well done!

                Nothing Fancy???:shock:

                I’d be so worried I might ding it I could never take a bow that fine hunting. It would be hard enough just to use it on the archery range. I’d conside that a backyard only bow.:D

                  Thanks all. Troy that bow started out as putting scraps together. It turned out ok. Nothing fancy like your spliced lam work.

                    I think alot of those really great looking bows start from scrap.

                      A beautiful bow. But some bad news. In the Wyoming elk hunting regs the minimum poundage for elk is 50#.

                        Yep that’s why I’m gonna build me another one. If not I can just pull one off the rack. I will have me one around 51 pounds or so.

                          Very nice. I’m a bit jealous of you guys who can do such beautiful work with wood. I have saws and files and chisels and hammers, too, but something else is missing for work that precise.

                                I thought about replying yesterday to tweek the info about bows for elk hunting as per Wyoming hunting regs. As I recalled the regs said 50# or “a bow capable of shooting an arrow of a certain? weight a certain? distance.” It seemed to me that a 48# bow might still be legal if tested.

                                At 66+ years I am a little less full of myself than in earlier decades. So I decided to check the regs to get the exact arrow weight and distance. Wow! I found that the regs were changed last November and 50# is the requirement for elk(period).

                                I also found that .223 Rem. is legal for deer and antelope, .357 Mag. is also now legal, and a bunch of other details. In my opinion the changes are a big improvement.

                                I learn something new almost every day…whether I intend to or not.:D

                                  Just about the time you think you have all the hunting regs. figured out, they change them!

                                  Here in Oregon it seems like they change them every year along with the cost of the lic. and tags:shock:

                                    I live in British Columbia, Canada. Here all you need for bowhunting big game is 40# minimum. Some people have taken elk or moose with a bow under 50# without problem.

                                      Oregon it is #40 for deer, Blk. bear, Antelope, and cougar.

                                      But #50 for elk, Big horn sheep, and Mt. Goat.

                                            Thanks all. I was able to get into my little shop today and start some new limbs. cut me some foam cores and and veneers. still looking in the scrap bucket for some wedge material and hope to get me some new limbs glued up in the next couple days.

                                                  Never mind, I do have a scrap pile worth a little look through. We are in the process of building our new house and I found a small piece of wood that once filed and sanded fit just fine. I glued it on and am getting ready to put a finish on the bow, then comes the leather for the grip, side plate and a little velcro for the arrow rest. Never give up on the scrap pile whether it’s wood or metal, just keep pawing through it!:D
