I’m currently shooting a 60″ PSE Stalker @ 45# and am looking to move up to 50#. The 60″ PSE Mustang seems similar enough and can take advantage of fast flight v/s Dacron.

Any thoughts for moving to 50# on a budget? I’m willing to spend more than the $$ for a Mustang and need a quiet bow that’s easy to handle both from the ground and a climber stand.

Both the Samick Sage and Samick Journey are excellent takedown recurves at a very reasonable (low) price.

I recently did the same. I shoot a Kodiak Hunter, 43 lbs at my (finally!)measured 27 inch draw. I have a Shakespeare Sierra at about 42 lbs at my draw. I found a great deal on a Kodiak Magnum, 53 lbs @ 28 so I’m pulling about 50 even. It’s not a takedown, but I can comment on the difference in my release with the heavier poundage on my fingers. I shoot the Magnum better than my lighter bows, because, for me, I get a more consistent release. No problem drawing and holding the 50 lbs at anchor, since the lighter bows were a good workout to prepare.

I resisted owning a Kodiak Magnum for years because I was leery of the 52 inch length. But a couple years back I succumbed and bought a used 1966 model in 52# on eBay, and I will never be without one again.

This is an enormously handy bow and it shoots well. They are not the quietest bows out of the block sometimes, but that can be tamed by the judicious application of your favorite silencer arrangement.

I took a friend who was getting out of compound bows to look at recurves this past summer. He didn’t like the grip on the new ones, and I agreed with him. But when he held a 70s era version, you couldn’t pry it out of his hands.

There are all kinds of the Grayling-era K-Mags available in very good condition almost every day on eBay for under $250, and frequently for under $200. You can almost have your pick of hunting weights if you’re patient.

There’s a Browning Wasp on ebay 55#s which are not seen often. They’re 56 long and nice bows. I have one that’s 45# which is the more common configuration. I think there are a lot of deals and good bows available. The Bears are in higher demand, probably for good reason, but there are others that are fine shooters that could be a steal and get the job done. Have fun with the search! Dwc

I haven’t quieted mine down adequately yet, but I’m working on it. I added beaver balls, and am planning limb pads next. I have to add weight to my arrows, which should help. Currently braced at 7 5/8. The Kodiak Magnum I bought is a mid 70s greenie. I wanted a short bow that matched the grip on my Kodiak Hunter, and the Hunter happens to be a greenie as well.

I used to shoot a 62″ recurve but found it hard to manage in the tree stand environment I have in my hunting turf. I finally went to the Bear Cheyenne at 60#. With my draw length of 29.5″ I guess I am holding a 64 pound force at full-draw. I have fallen in love with this bow! At 55″ AMO (what ever that is supposed to mean because it uses a 51″ string and is 52″ tip to tip when strung) it is very nimble in both ground blinds and tree-stands. It draws smooth, no finger pinch, it is quiet with an otter fur silencer top and bottom and I am getting 4″ groups at 20 yards with cedar arrows and feather fletch. I LOVE my Bear Cheyenne!

You might want to check it out.

                    Best Regards,

                      John,

Thanks for the recommendation. Bears are always regarded as solid bows.

I hear the shorter bows require more concentration and improved fundamentals because they’re inherently more sensitive to small movements. If nothing else, they should force archers to become better shooters.

I used my 60″ in December for a hunting trip and it was a touch awkward in the climber stand. I was able to adapt and overcome, though shooting lanes were very limited because the stand can interfere in places if the bow isn’t canted to some extent.

                        J,

Thank you. I’ll check them out during my research. Tough part is doing this right, because there are so many options on the market!

                          ArthurW,

Thank you. I’m hearing great things about Bear bows and will definitely look into them more.

                            Eidsvolling,

I never thought of e-bay, and it sounds like a good idea for finding a bow. I’ll admit that finding something a bit rare and with some character is an exciting prospect.

                              DWC,

Thank you! I’ll add Browning to the list and get out there to see what e-bay is offering.
