I made a block with tapered holes and I am wondering if anyone knows the technique to get a smooth finish with out tool marks (spiral marks down the length of the shaft). any tips would be handy.

I’ve never used one but I read and article in TBM a while back about making shafts and in there they used one after turning them from square stock. In the article they heated theirs up in a frying pan hot enough to where water sizzled on it and then ran the shaft through it. Like I said I’ve never used one only read about them so my advice might be like peeing in the wind haha. The one in the article was bought at 3 Rivers.

I make mine out of hard maple, taper half the hole through a 1″ block and burnish the other half using the chuck end of a drill bit. The shaft turning with a 1/2″ drill creates enough heat to adequately compress and finish an arrow.
