I was shooting my Black Widow 60″ recurve today and when I drew back it came apart in my hands. This was my Fathers bow. He passed away several years ago. I just started hunting last year and my plan was to take my first deer with his bow. I had made a bow quiver that was strapped to both limbs and it came apart on the bottom limb. The laminations came apart. I wonder if this could be fixed. In the mean time I’m going to try to get use to shooting my Fathers other bow. It is a Bear 48″ Super Magnum 48# pull. This is a lot different than the Widow. I’ll see how it goes. I have just over a month before opening day. I’m so bummed.

You can contact Black Widow, when they build a bow they take all the spec’s for the individual bow. So with the bow’s serial number you should be able to have a new set of limbs built for it and they should fit like the original limbs, that is if it a take down bow.

No, it’s not a take down bow. I’m going to contact Black Widow and see if they can do anything. We’ll see.

I have heard from friends over here in OZ that the after sales service from Widow is second to none , such a shame to hear though.

I spoke with Black Widows customer service today. They said that delaminations can’t be repaired. The Black Widow has been officially retired.:( My brother-in-law I believe has saved my deer season though. He let me borrow his Shakespeare Ocala X-17 60″ 50lb recurve.:) My Father picked this bow out for my sister to buy Rick, her future husband. So, my Father is still connected to this bow.:) It shoots very similar to my Black Widow. My brother-in-law still wants me to switch to compounds, but at least he is helping me out with his bow. I’ll keep you updated.

                    Jaytbuzzard —
Sorry about your fathers BW bow. Good luck with the Ocala. It was my first bow{same Poundage} and I took My first Big Game { PA wt buck}with it in 1970. I still have it and shoot it. I hope your Ocala will be as lucky for you as mine was for me.

I’d be bummed too. It would be cool if you could get them to build a new one using the same wood type and design. A tribute bow. Wonder if they could take the old one down to the riser wood and build it back up with new limbs. Anyway, good luck with the Ocala. Your Dad will be with you in your heart no matter what you hunt with.

I’m sorry to hear that. I’d like to offer a different perspective to make you feel better. That bow was built and purchased to be shot, and that is what it was. Shot. An unshot bow is like living in a state of prevention, which isn’t really living anyway.

Display it proudly on the mantle. It lived in your father’s hands and in yours. It had a full life and is now chock full of memories from tip-to-tip. Nothing changes as far as that is concerned.

Sir, shoot the super mag 48!!! forget that other bow. if you shoot 3 fingers under (you wont get pinch) and that bow should be easy to dial in… i have one and it’s second to none!!!!! btw, it’s also second to none out of a tree and bets are you hunt from a tree stand???

I do shoot three fingers under. I have only shot the Super Mag a few times. I was use to shooting the Black Widow and the Shakespeare feels the same to me. With only a month before opening day, I wouldn’t feel confident hunting with the Bear at this point. You are right, I do hunt from an elevated tree stand and the Bear would give me more room. Last night I put my Beaver silencers on and shot for a while. I could not believe how accurate I was and how quiet the bow was. I quess I got it tuned pretty well. I can’t wait to get up a tree and practice.

Are you going to hunt with the “Ocala”? My Impression from your post. You do not hear much about them now – but they were/are a very accurate, easy to shoot bow! Quiet for a recurve–
PS – I also own Bear “Magnums” and love them for their special purpose.

Yes, I’ll be hunting with the Ocala. I was really impressed with how quiet the bow was. The Magnum does have a place in hunting with it’s short size. I’ll have to spend some time shooting it, but I don’t know how I would do switching back and forth between the two bows. My aiming point is a lot different between the Ocala and the Magnum.

Great – I think staying with one bow for that hunt is best [ it is for me]I did not realize how quiet the ” Ocala ” was until I owned other bows {It is not called the “wonderbow” for nothing– haha]. Good Luck ! I hope you have a great Hunt.
