I’m trying to get a hold of some Flint or Agate so that I can start my journey into Knapping. I’ve been told that these Materials have to be heat treated prior to knapping. I’m not sure if there is any truth to this. I had found some flint on Ebay purchased it, a friend of mine told me that it would not knapp properly because it had not been heat treated. Point being, does anybody know where I can buy some Flint or Agate that would be ready to be worked with. I’ll even consider buying Arrowheads at this point.

Try Log Cabin shooting supplies, mostly muzzleloader, but they used to carry large flint nodules for knapping, bought some myself longtime ago to use w/my flintlock. it was orginally used as ballast on english sailing ships during the revolutionary era.

To start I’ve never knapped flint but I can’t see what effect heat will have on flint other than to exploit any cracks or faults. Interested to hear otherwise.
You might try Will at http://www.beyond2000bc.co.uk although he’s a continent away he is very helpful drop him a line.
Mark.

Dixie Gun Works sell flint in approx. 3# rocks. Flint can be used without heating. Heating just helps make the spalls come off finer. Makes for better control.

Thanks a for the input guys. I’m really looking forward to knapping my own arrow heads. I gotta say that I’ve fallen in love with Trad bow hunting just as much as Saltwater Flyfishing…
