The first time I watched his show I almost busted a gut laughing. My first thoughts were, this fellow is as full of #$#@# as a christmas turkey.

After seeing afew more of his shows and hearing statements about todays hunting techinecs I have to say he does make since.

I’ll be darned. That is pretty good. If I owned a tv I might try to watch his show. That and one more would make two. I doubt that his take will catch on much, but I like it a lot.

I have watched Tred Barta on his T.V. show several years ago and thought that the two of you were eerily similar in your outlook toward hunting and ethics. Although both of you have different styles, Tred (outspoken, abrasive, east coast- in your face delivery, while wielding a machete) and you (outspoken, challenging, thought provoking with a fencers grace) each get the same message accross and are able to effect so many more people because your approach IS so different. I think a new Traditional show with you and Tred as hosts should be piloted and aired as soon as Elk season is over:)

I guess all of you know Tred had some health issues. Not sure what it was, stroke, brain aneurysm or something like that and is now paralized from the waste down. He still hunts from a wheel chair and is doing pretty good at it.

I’ve been watching Tred Barta for a few years now and can honestly give him a large part of the credit for me buying my first Longbow. Doing things the “Barta way” has been a n inspiration to me. I believe he is one of the most inspirational people on television today. Even more so, since suffering from a spinal stroke that left him paralyzed, but not crippled. I only hope that my will is half as strong as his should I be faced with such adversity. Thanks to him, I learned that it’s possible to hunt (and succeed) the way I love to hunt. With impossible goals, “primitive” techniques, and unwavering integrity.

I guess I’ll go against the grain on this one.

I haven’t watched his show in years because, a) I don’t get that channel anymore (by choice), and b) because after seeing a few of his early episodes I’d had enough. One of the first shows I saw was when he was hunting mule deer does in Colorado. If memory serves, he shot 14 arrows amounting to 12 misses, one gut shot deer he stopped looking for after a few hours, and finally a clean kill. The other show that stood out to me was his caribou hunt. After going on and on about his 20-yard effective range, the rest of the episode was him launching Hail Marys left and right from two to three times that effective range at running animals. Maybe it was how I was raised, but had I pulled that type of thing growing up, my grandfather would have used my bowhunting equipment for campfire kindling…after planting his boot up my backside. And if I did it now, and submitted an article about it to TBM, I would fully expect anything else bearing my name to find a home in their paper shredder.

I do agree with some of the things he says. But I have a difficult time taking an ethics lecture seriously from a guy who has no problem portraying traditional bowhunters as a bunch of bumbling fools who can’t hit what they’re aiming at and have so little disregard for the animals they hunt that they’ll fling arrow after arrow with little hope of a clean kill. If that’s “the Barta way,” I’ll take a pass.

I’ve seen just enough of his videos to never want to see another. It is a shame about his health condition, but his ego is more than enough to get him thru. If I ever hear “Now that’s doing it the hard way.”, or “That’s the Barta way.” again, it will be to soon.

I think the shows you talk about must have been the first ones I saw. Thats why my first impressions of him was as I said “he was full of it as a christmas turkey”.

Still, after watching afew more I began to feel he has days just like everyone else. Brain F@%#$ aren’t reserved just for beginners.

You have to remember, the only way he can keep his show on TV is to show what he does and how he does it. If he only put out shows with kill after kill it would be nothing better than all the rest. I’m sure there are other TV celebs that feel he is the court gester of outdoor TV and he very well may be.

I’m not happy that he shows what he does. It simply adds fuel to the fire in what alot of people think about Trad hunters.

If only we knew what the other shows cut and leave on the editing room floor.

Lots of folks out here in hunting America that live what they preach….they walk the talk, to put it in modern vernacular.
One should be careful who they pick for their team, especially when that person is a poster boy for double speak.

I hope Tred means what he says, but I’m currently not convnced any more than I am about the bulk of the disgusting hunting shows that treat the sport like it’s a game show. I do have a television, and the internet, and there are plenty negative examples to view. There are positive ones also, but they seem to be outnumbered. Many times the click of the camera creates different personalities. I prefer consistency in those who portray us to the public.

yeah, I have always liked Tred, I think he is one of those guys you either love or hate. No doubt about it he has a huge heart!

I watch his show for a while, but after he gut shot an elk with a stone point, and then lost it and said on TV “Oh, that’s bowhunting!”. I was disgusted.

I personally don’t know the man. I guess personally he’s a real nice guy. But he comes off as a Ted Nugent Braggart with a high school education ( a lot more credit than I give that idiot Nugent!).

Barta preaches.. and it s ALWAYS – “Do as I say, Not as I do!”. He talks about “ethical” shots and staying within ones competency range all the time. Then he turns around.. gut shoots a muley at 40 yards and loses it, takes a 50 yard shot at a RUNNING Caribou, and gut shoots an elk and says, well that’s bowhunting it happens.

No… he is NO ambassador to Traditional Bowhunting or Traditional Archery. I heard some people don’t buy from 3Rivers anymore because they endorse his product line.

Well we know no body can please everyone but if we are honest about it I think all of us have taking some “un-ethical” shots or have bent the rules of good conservation once or twice. Of course we don’t put in on the big screen for everyone to see our flaws and mistakes.

But what really cracks me up, if people ever watched some old Fred Bear videos or read some books that Fred or Glenn St. Charles wrote on there hunting trips, these guys would be labeled as out laws.

We just need to have a little more grace with one another and concentrate on the things we do have in common.

Anointed… I don’t agree with you on the first paragragh. NO. I have never taken an “unethical” shot NOR have I ever “bent” the conservation laws.

As far as longshots, etc. from the old timers I know you are right there. Different time, different mentality then too.

Like I said Tred is most likely one of the nicest guys in the world. BUT his “do as I say, not as I do”… gets unbearable. Especially with the lousy shots he routinely takes. He gives Traditional Bowhunting a Big Black Eye on a nationwide public stage. They must think we’re all buffoons!

And then we wonder why the wheel bow crowd says “do you hunt with that”? As a serious question.

Steve, I was going to write something like that. I watched him flinging arrows at running Elk from 30-40 yards, and was not happy either. Regardless, the message in this video remains solid as a rock to me. Plus he is a champion of public land access, from the multi million dollars shores of the Hamptons, to the National Forests of the West.
If only someone would teach Tred how and when to shoot!!!

Tred Barta — Fred Eichler are the 2 best known imho ” “outhouse channel” Trad bow Personalities. I personally do not care for the Dramatized Histrionics/emotional displays !?! portrayed on their programs* [ and ethereal ethics displayed by Barta]. Maybe we should challenge them to “Walk the Talk” come into our ” House”: not in a true challenge — but in a teaching-“Way”. WE; Show them how it is done. Put our “Money”[ honor/integrity ] where our mouth is ? If we trully want to Change attitudes of the undecided – we need to show them who we really are. Videography is the Future – yea I know [ Iam an old geezer also]– but here we are “preaching to the Choir”**—
How do we get to the avg person to realize we are trully the protectors of what is left?

*yea – I got it, it is about money — I have actually had a couple of these shows on property I was involved with. Although I have to admit – their Cinematography is Beautiful

would deal with all these issues? or invite these 2 TV programs to be involved with our members – hunting / under our protocols ?!? — you never know unless you ask — [ Of course you need to make sure you control your portion of the final program ] — they are famous for editing —

Treds entertainment thats what most outdoor TV shows are about, I watched him when I could on Versus and sometimes I really liked his shows sometimes he annoyed or pissed me off, thats his way! The only reason I started to watch his program is that it was one of the only outdoor shows that featured any Traditonal archery at all, esspecially with a longbow! I quit watching though, when they had the show, after is medical problems,( which I really feel for him by the way no one deserves that), where they treed the Black Bear and then he shot it from the wheel chair!I under stand why they did it put that kind of turned me off, havn’t watched the show much since that episode!
