This year has started off very well for me. I harvested a spring turkey and my first black bear. -Just for clarification, shotgun and rifle as I’m waiting anxiously for my longbow to be made- This truly has been a blessed start to the hunting season. But as I read over magazines and books the next season seems a million years away. What makes this next season oh so special is that as far as I can remember I’ve always wanted to hunt with a longbow. And it’s happening, slowly. I’ve taken game with a compound bow but it’s neverbeen the dream. If that makes sense. I had taken 7 or 8 years off and flew hawks for that time and was hunting more than I should have being a family guy and all. More than I should have means about 6 months of everday hunting and maybe not hunting 10 days of that time. I just like being out there. But that kind of time is rough on a family. So I hung up the glove. Then a brilliant idea popped in my head, why not do that thing you’ve always wanted to do. So I am. And it’s dragging. I’ve made lists of everything I can hunt and marked the seasons out on the calendar. Oh but the pages don’t turn nearly fast enough. I call my bow guy, still on track. Call the arrow guy, they are being made and the wait goes on. I’ve recently discovered through packing out my bear that I’m not in as tip top shape as I had hoped. So I spend my afternoons after work walking up and down a horrible hill in hopes of building some stanima and shedding a few pounds. All for the day when I drop into the wilderness, bow in hand, tags in pocket, to do that thing I’ve always wanted to do. But man it’s slow. Anyone else itching to get their hunt on?

The honest answer for me is that though I look forward to the seasons, I’ m no longer as obsessed with looking forward to them as I once was. I’m trying to enjoy the rest of the year too. I feel a bit more in balance at this point of my life speaking strictly for myself.
