Socrates, the Greek philosopher considered his highest calling to be a gadfly (s stinging insect) to those in power. They killed him for it.
Anyway, I’ve been following in his footsteps lately with my congress-critters. I have been writing letters and emails and buttonholing them when possible over the way deer season is going in this state. I really believe that too many doctors are giving out crossbow permits for no good reason. They now allow pistols during the blackpowder hunt, why? I don’t blackpowder hunt but a modern 44 magnum is a distinct advantage over a single shot muzzleloader. I want everyone to hunt, but archery season needs to be archery, you know, recurves, longbows, compounds, not crossbows. Crossbows belong in the rifle season.
I’m also quick to congratulate them when they do well. The have opened more land to walk-in only, which is great for us traditionalists. They’ve built or are building a few more archery ranges around the state. I’ve also got to brag on our Conservation Department, they are very helpful to landowners trying to improve the environment for deer, turkeys, and other game animals.
When you see your land management, natural resources folks talk nicely to them but let them know that there is a place for us traditionals also.

Lucky you…
We had the same thing for decades…doctor’s permit to go String-Gun in bow season… then… all the X-bow Mfg’s started lobbying (to put in nicely) and String guns are now legal for anyone in archery…
Whatever happened to archery, State’s own definition, of “hand drawn and hand-held in the presence of game?”
Kudos to you for your efforts and keeping the faith!

Texas went with x-bows during archery season also a couple of years ago. I think it sucks but money lobby’s way more efficiently and fills pocket books faster than we little peons do.
My opinions not even looked at on their way to file 13 I’m sure.
Fortunately I’ve not been around any x-bows yet and hopefully where I hunt I probably won’t have to contend with it . Our archery club hasn’t been confronted with the inclusion of them yet either.
I’ve just returned from one of the major outdoor stores and where what little trad stuff they had on the wall has been totally replaced by x-bow parts and pieces. Yuck!

Yup, Ralph. Loyalty follows the MONEY!
I worked at a diversified shop that claimed they’d not buy nor sell “military style guns”.
You should see the Black Rifles and other odd looking critters adorning their gun racks and glass cabinets NOW!
MONEY talks… and concerned citizenry squawks… and ne’r the twain shall meet!
Time was…but alas, today “show me the money—show you MY vote” from those in polut-aticks

Our Conservation Department is funded entirely by a small sales tax on (1/8 of 1%) on sporting goods. They are relatively free of the influence of politicians, however, there is a fairly vocal group of pols in Jefferson City who don’t like it. I voted for 3 of these men and I’ve told everyone of them to leave MODoC alone…they’ve done a fairly good job so far.
The funny thing about that sales tax is it has allowed the state to buy land for hiking, etc,,that us hunters can’t hunt on, something I remind folks of when they go off about hunting poor innocent animals.

As bad as it gets in your neck of the woods, you can always count on NC to make you look good.
This year, the legislature took deer management away from the wildlife department and gave it to the agriculture department. That’s so we can have more deer farms here, and less wild deer running around breaking windshields… Yep, insurance company lobbyists working with the CEO of Food Lion to make deer just another cow.
No announcement, no public discussion, no senate debate. Just a line in the budget.
