This winter I will have depleted my stock of cedar shafts, and am switching to douglas fir. I would appreciate if those of you who have used douglas fir could recommend specific stain and sealer combinations for me to use with them. I’ve searched the archives, but haven’t come up with any specific combinations.

For the sake of others who may be as ignorant as I (God help them!), could you please tell me which specific Minwax stain and poly it is you’re using? 😕

Got my phone replaced, going hunting tomorrow then I’ll get pics here of what I use. Meanwhile you can spend lots of time straightening those shafts. 2-3 times never hurt:)

Buddy of mine’s new arrows look pretty good and they would probably shoot well if they were straight.:roll: Dunno about some!!!!

My experience with Doug fir is that it is incredibly tough but prone to warpage, especially if there are islands in the grain as is often the case. The sealant mentioned should be fine, but apply tons of it and check your shafts frequently. Don

I use Surewood shafts. All but one out of 3 dozen was straight and tend to stay straight. They are the best wooden shafts I have ever used. They are douglas fir.I also use Minwax stain and sealer on them with fletch tape for the fletchings.

Hey Ralph, do you wipe that on with a rag or are you using it in a dipping tube?

Jim, I use a rag. Usually I do three coats.

Another thought, that stuff will eat up latex gloves. I found some rubber? gloves, like kitchen gloves, that work. Problem there for me is most kitchen workers have much smaller hands than mine. One size fits all is a joke for me.

Thanks for the tips Ralph, I’m going to head out to the hardware store tomorrow and see what they’ve got. I just ordered a couple dozen douglas fir shafts so will be able to put them to the test soon 😉
