I don’t have any experience, but of course I have an opinion, lmao. Looking at them, I would think that there would be a greater chance of them getting in the way of the string, compared to the jacket style. Maybe if you wore some type of belt to hold the middle down.

I have always made my own [ learned in the service ] if you go to http://www.theghilliesuits.com/ghilliesuitkits.html they have directions and materials for you to do same. they work well as long as they blend with the terrain you are hunting in, and you bind/up or keep them short so as not to hamper the string. they are basically strips of burlap [ contrasting colors]sewn to backing – coat/pants/poncho-in their original format. They come in a 1000 variations now –

I tell you what Readyhawk. If you want to make one, then I would be more than willing to try it for you and see how it works on deer. That’s just the kind of guy I am:wink:

I used a ghillie-type poncho sold by 3 Rivers last year and loved it. It was made, apparently, for a hunter sitting in a blind as it is very long in front. After a couple of outings, I cut it off so the front brushes about midway up my boots. I have used it both sitting and standing and had no problem with shot interference. I did trim some of the leafy stuff off the bow arm and by the end of the season was wearing a camo jacket underneath and pushing the ghillie up to my shoulder on the bow arm. You can cut the cloth handle of the carry-bag and wear the thing over a small brimmed hat as a head net to complete the effect.

I’ve had birds fly in and sit on my arrow while wearing the thing. Late last season, I was moving along the edge of a woods when three hunters with shotguns and a dog came angling through the brush past me. I spoke to the nearest guy who looked and looked, then started off without seeing me. So, I whistled and waved my arm; he still didn’t see me. I ended up taking the hood off and speaking to him so they would know I was out there.

I still have to worry about wind direction, of course, but the poncho is a real confidence builder as far as not being seen.

I got the netting and jute string online and made my own. I cut the netting out in the outline of my 3d leafy asat camo jacket. I then used large black safty pins and pinned it to the jacket. I also made a piece for my bush hat. the ghilie covers my head shoulders and the back of my arms. I trimmed the jute on my bow arm to ensure good clearance. I had a wren land on my while posted in a field edge and I probably had close to 40 something turkeys pass me buy during the deer archery season and none of them seemed to mind it even at 10 feet. Deer would look at me then keep moving. They would notice me but not get all buggered up. problem was getting a shot off. If was really fun. I will try to get a pic of it posted so you can see it.

Here are the picks of my ghilie suit…if you decide to make your own keep in mind the colors described online for the synthetic jute are not even close…I ordered brown grey and tan but the brown looked like black the tan like white and the grey a pale green…I had gotten brown burlap and pulled it apart into the jute strings and put a bunch into the suit and it all worked out well in the end. I didn’t do pants I just wear the 3d ASAT pants. Good Luck and enjoy making it and share some pics of it your suit when you do get one.

That is cool looking. Good job. Just a word of warning if you decide to add burlap. They are VERY flammable then, so be careful around flames. Better to get nonflammable materials to use. I remember a hunter a few years back that tried to light a cig while in one and became a human torch:shock:
