A past issue of TBM (that I can’t identify immediately) included an excellent article by Don Thomas on the virtues of cross-country skis for hunting. (Hoping that our Webmom can tell us when it was published so others can see it.) The technique has also been discussed occasionally here in the forums.
This is a match made in heaven as far as I’m concerned. However, I’ve found someone who makes the vaunted Dr. Thomas look like a downright sissy when it comes to pursuing game in the wintertime. 😉
An ancient technique of skiing with just one long pole is famously depicted in an 1889 painting from Norway which shows the original Birkebeinere carrying the infant future King Håkon IV to safety through the mountains. The technique was used in Norway into the early 20th century but was then lost.
However, it has survived into the present in the Altai Mountains of China. The 2014 discovery in Norway of an intact binding on a ski some 1300 years old prompted an exchange visit to Norway this month by some skiers from China. One of them shows the technique in the video at the bottom of this linked article. As you’ll see, even this guy’s arrow is longer than Don’s. 😈

The only one I can find is Stick Bows and Skinny Skis in the Summer ’91 issue, which is sold out. Don may have mentioned cross country skis in other articles as well.
I don’t think I’d be calling Don a sissy. 😆 He’s done more tough hunts than all of us put together. He doesn’t take any shortcuts, even with a few years on most of us.
I was waiting for whatever that is behind the skier to swing around and knock him in the head. At least that’s what would happen to me! Cool video.

I’ll have to ck that out. The only problem I have in Idaho is we aren’t getting snow levels in Dec when I hunt thats good for skiing. I do use poles when hiking and backpacking. Last week I went out hunting grouse and there was 2 inches of snow between 6k and 7k ft. Think snow.

Only used that ‘cuz I’m separated from him by a mountain range or two. 😉
Thanks for finding the article citation. (For those who don’t know, the online access to sold-out issues is a prime reason to buy a Premium TBM membership.)

Here’s a link to an excellent short video of the Altai skiers in action at home on a hunt:

That’s a great painting. Dwc

I’m sure I have a book at home that shows a Finn using cross country skies and carrying a bear spear, I’ll dig it out tonight.
Mark.

Now the title of this thread certainly caught my eye! Little known fact: in addition to some Spanish and French, I speak fluent Norwegian. The main text begins: “I am learning to ski with one pole so that someday I can use two, like Montana bowhunter Don Thomas.”

Love it. Must have been lost in some local dialect all these years. dwc

Hei du! Bra at du snakker norsk så godt. Google Translate bare driter på slike oppdrag, vet du. 😉

That’s eastern Norwegian. I only speak the North Dakota dialect. Don

1. My Norwegian relatives are in fact in the eastern part of the country.
2. When I watched the movie “Fargo”, I turned to my equally Minnesotan wife and denounced the dialect as far in excess of anything I ever heard before. Then I went back home a few years later for my sister’s birthday, and a guy showed up who could have been a dialect coach for the cast. I had to leave the room to stop staring at him. He was from somewhere near Detroit Lakes.
3. Webmom, I’m reading up on ancient Danish bows to get ready to make a replica this winter, and my Danish ability is derived from my Norwegian, so yes, this all does relate to trad bows. 😉

Well, as long as it’s all related to bows… 😆
I was going with the fact that the skier was shooting a bow somewhere in the video (remember that video?) dontchaknow!

I never thought I’d find out that Fargo was related to archery, but I’m quite pleased. It’ll keep me smiling in the stand …
Yep, somehow it’s all related. Dwc
