Man, there will be fewer trees than you are used to. First thing you will need to understand from a hunting perspective is that virtually all land is under private ownership and access without some fee or lease arrangement attached is really a thing of the past. Having said that, the Panhandle is a very pretty place in a very western way – depending upon where you are talking about going. The mule deer hunting is excellent, as is the whitetail hunting. There are limited pronghorn hunting options available and hogs in most areas. Pheasant and duck hunting is excellent and offers the easiest access with wild quail following a distant third.

The great news about the panhandle is that you are very close to some really tremendous western game hunting in both New Mexico and Colorado. Nebraska and Kansas are both close as well, relatively speaking. If you don’t mind leasing, you can pick up some great country for a relatively good price close to home. Winters are worse than what I get in South Texas, but they are nothing compared to what you are used to in Michigan. Summers are hot, but the wind always blows and there is very little humidity.

I moved to Texas a year ago from Minnesota. I did not hunt this year, because I am not a millionaire!!! there is virtually no public land, and leases will cost you a fortune! Next year I am going over to Arkansas, they have alot of public land there, and the out-of-state tag isn’t that bad.
Of course I live in the DFW area, not the panhandle. It could be different up there.
            Good Luck!
