        I am wondering what is the typical brace height for recurves and longbows. Ive had soem fo my bows over 20 years and typically run 6.5 to 7 inch on my longbows and depending on the bow around 8 inch on recurves. I never recieved any specs for them with the bows except my black widow which came with the factory user manual. I am shooting bows from 55# to 80# in my longbows and recurves from 60 to a very stout 67# never scaled some of them but they feel like the scale was off on some of them. i have a martin hunter that says 65# but feels more like 80# great training bow for building muscle.

          I think it depends on the individual bowyer and the bows they design.

            Hi Codger… I’m no expert. But Brace Heights haven’t changed much last I heard or tried. Seven inches on a Longbow is about right, same with eight for a recurve then adjust accordingly. Brace height does effect the “feel” of the draw at least, so I think I understand what you are saying. It’s not the feel of poundage that I care about, it’s making sure the brace height and nock height put the arrow where I point it. I have a Flatbow I’ve been tuning and it will hit the eyebrow on a nat’s eye at 20 yards, but the Brace & Nock height has o be dead on. Extremely accurate but very sensitive at the same time.

              My Mahaska recurve seems to prefer 7 1/4″

                I recently purchased a hicckory and bamboo bow from Rudderbows. It shot ok at about six inch. I emailed Rudderbows and they replied immeditatly and said try between 6.5 and 7.5 starting at 7 inches. it shots really sweet at 7″ and the bow feels very different so ill be experimenting a little with it. I was just curious what others have found to work well. im getting pretty good arrow flight out of them all. when things go badly its usually me making a bad release or not following thorugh like i should. thanks for the input looks like im on the right track.

                  I don’t think brace height specs are etched in stone. Adjust your height up or down one twist at a time until it feels right and produces good arrow flight. If it feels right but still getting some porpoising, adjust the nock height. In my opinion the bow will tell you when things are right.

                              well tuning is fun and it keeps me busy. one of my jeffery royal hunters i bought a while back is getting great arrow flight and its very accurate but i for some reason frequently lift the arrow off the shelf while drawing. I set it the same as my other hunter which is 62″ this one is 56″ Im thinking i need to raise the nock point a little. Im pretty sure im using good form and drawing straight back. time to experiment a little.
