Anyone ever used or tried to use the 5 gallon paint strainer bags from the hardware stores as meat bags? 5 gallon (19 liter) capacity; weight capable to better than 40# each, lightweight, cheap, and decent mesh.

Never tried them, but it seems a good idea as I just wrap boned-out meat into a shamag and tie it to the outside of my pack. I first lay the boned-out meat over a rock in the shade so it “skins” over so it’s not wet before being wrapped…

Had to think on this for a couple days…

As with plastic bags, some are garbage and leaf and not fit for contact with edible meat…the acid in meat leaches out stuff you don’t want in your body! 😯

I would be hesitant on things used for paint straining as there is nothing about paint that would preclude using things somewhat toxic if in contact with raw meat for a period of time!

Pillow cases, and I bought elk 1/4 bags years back I’d not gotten to use… seem a less potentially haz mat source than your strainers… that and some “sourdoughs” in MT told me to quarter meat with the hide left on, then use big box of black pepper to coat the meat well on the bloody side and the flies won’t touch it! Once dried, just strap on the pack frame pepper side out and go!
