The egg crate idea is OK…every pack I own has a metal match, a bunch of dryer lint, and lodgepole pine pitch chunks. I can start a fire in any weather condition, with just a few strokes of the metal match with my knife. Small, compact and it works every time

Can I play devil’s advocate
Take your pack into the yard when it next rains
Wait until you are nice and wet and getting cold
Put your dominant hand behind your back and under your belt
Now light a fire
Now open you first aid kit
Being able to light a fire gives you a warm glow doing it in adverse conditions could save your life.
Mark.

Might be an interesting experiment also in another environment like the high winds we deal with in my part of the world. Not much in the way of wind breaks or shelter.
Right now though with the high fire danger one might be a bit picky in choosing one’s place to practice fire building.
We had a close call at the archery range Sunday. Whew!!
