A good site reflecting the most current knowledge on the old guy. I saw an excellent dvd and the current thinking is that he was not shot by a band of hostile attackers, as has previously been portrayed, but rather shot in the back at close range by a “friend.” The mystery should continue to unfold. I was impressed that their tests have shown you can easily and accurately take down game from 30-50m with his bow, those archaeologists must be better shots than me 😆

Jim — I think most of the game there and then was smallish, most ovids like, as pronounced back in Okie, “Shammy.” Alps eagles have no problem lifting them from cliffs. Of course they’re small targets too.

I’ve been to Kandersteg, Switzerland, to the International Scout Chalet that is located there, in the summer of 1963. We strapping 18 yr. old bulletproof lads went “mountain climbing” in “them thar hills”. We saw some chamois(whoops, shammys :lol:)) and where they were located I totally respect anyone taking one with any wooden bow. They are rather small critters and they get around like mountain goats.

Another tale sometime, we boys got into some predicaments that we’re lucky to have survived and we’re lucky all of us came home. We also got caught in the rain and like to died from hypothermia.

Fascinating stuff. I’ve watched the documentaries. His equipment looks like it was well made despite what it has gone through. The copper axe head is beautifully made and may be the most intact item in his kit. Thanks for posting the link.

I find Otzi fascinating…I saw a really good documentary on him where they thawed him out and did a bunch of test. It showed what he had last eaten (Shammy and a crude bread) but also that he had heart disease! The fact that he carried a bow and is a true mountain man really makes him tops in my book (next to another old guy that runs the mountains with a bow). I would love to go to the museum but maybe it will travel to the U.S. someday.

Something to ponder: On a planet populated by upwards of 7 billion people, the number of us who can actually relate personally to how this person found daily sustenance is quite small. And it doesn’t include anybody riding training wheels, in my book. 😀
