What a beautiful day this was, the sun was out and I was able to take a few hours to do a bit of Chicken hunting. I decided to bring my little 52″ flatbow and away I went. As I got to my winter shelter area, I started a fire and off I went. Not 15 minutes in my walk, I spotted a spruce hen walking through the willows and in a matter of seconds, it flew off into the timber landing on a dry white spruce branch about 12 feet up in the tree. It took me a few minutes to find it but the first thing that caught my attention was the little chirping sound they make. “Oh my, there it is, not 10 yards away, should I try and get closer?”. Not a chance, the spruce grouse was certainly getting edgy, the more time I took to get set up, the more of a dance it was doing on the branch. the good thing for me is in its agitation, it turned broadside.
” So there we go, take your time, pick a spot”, I repeated to myself. I came to full draw, thought about my follow through and released the arrow….it connected and the bird immediatly fell to the ground.
As I waited a few minutes, I thanked the Creator for allowing me to shoot this bird.
All in all, it was a fabulous day, here’s a picture of the day’s success.

Did you eat that delicious, mouth-watering hen all by yourself, StandingBear?
Re our conversation yesterday, when you get a chance could you show a pic of your modified BH and tell the guys and gals how to really hunt the fool hens with a tamarack pole and moose sinew-let’s see, step #1: Kill a moose!#2- get a helicopter to fly ONE-HALF the moose out at a time!
Stay warm and keep smiling-Bert -
