Hey fellas, do you blokes have many ferals that you can hunt all year round if you have access to land? I know you have excellent management of your native species but I never seem to see any ferals taken in American mags. This is not a criticism, I’m just curious. Hell, I’d have a hide to criticise anyone as we down here in the Antipodes could learn an awful lot from you blokes on game management, trust me! Individuals with land that holds game may practice some kind of game management, but if you have feral deer on your land you MUST report and the Govt will destroy them as the Govt. considers them a “pest species”! As over all policy Game Management is almost non-existent. They would rather poison the deer than allow hunters access to them! The Govt. and the general public consider hunting offensive and you kind of keep it to yourself unless with other hunters. We are not allowed to hunt native animals with the bow down here either, but thats ok as we have so many feral species to hunt and we can take as many as the land owner will allow, whenever we like as long as we have access to private land. Hunting on public land is absolutely forbidden in the state I live in, Queensland, although over the border down in in New South Wales they do have the Game Council, a State Govt. body that , once you have an “R” licence, provides access to State Forests- some of them being bows only. Once again, though, you can only hunt ferals with a bow, no natives.

          Moreton,

About the only ferals we have over here are pigs. Even though they can be found in just about every state, their numbers vary greatly from state to state. The largest populations are found in the warmer southern states. In all the southern states from Texas to NC they have just about overrun the area. Some consider them a pest, while others consider them a way of life and make a business out of it by hunting them.

            Moreton,

Thought people in Australia would be tolerant of hunting, for some reason. Sorry to hear you have to keep it to yourselves as if there’s something to be ashamed of. I think bowhunting is one of the noblest of sports there is.

What are your native game animals? I was just wondering which ones you are missing out on. Must be hard to get traditional equipment there in Oz, huh?

Moreton, with the exception of pigs we consider most of the introduced animals as ‘exotics’, not ferals. Folks pay big dollars to hunt them, so they have been turned into an economic asset rather than a ‘pest’. Texas has exotic game from all over the world; far too many species to list, but you can Google ‘Texas Exotic Game Animals’ to get an idea of what’s available. Most are on large acerage, high-fenced ranches, but many species have escaped and are free ranging in parts of Texas; sometimes in large numbers.

The pigs are so bad in Texas it just became legal to hunt them from a helicopter. I can’t believe people charge to hunt them. They are very destructive.

Thanks fellas. “Exotics” is a much better way of approaching it I think, wish we’d thought of it! That way we would manage them as “game” instead of going to war with them as ferals! Most station (kind of Aussie for “Ranch”) owners are only too happy for you to kill feral pigs, rabbits, cats (don’t laugh, if one gets his claws on ya they can hurt ya bad, mate!) and sometimes feral goats (but for the last 5 years or so they have been getting mustered and sold to the Middle Eastern countries) they do incredible damage to the land and displace natives. We don’t have much in the way of native game, just emus,’roos and wallabies (which you can’t shoot with a bow, it’s illegal) but you can kill wild dogs/dingoes as there is very few pure bloods left, except for a couple of coastal island populations, which are pure-breds, and they are really bad on stock once they have bred with domestic dogs gone wild. From a bowhunters perspective, it’s a bloody good thing we have millions of ferals!Wink I’m told we have the only fully wild population of camels left in the world , too. Many blokes in the Northern Teriitory hunt them with the bow. Donkeys, too.

Yeah, people out West are fine with hunting, it’s just accepted it’s what men do, but in the cities it’s very different. In the last 30 years city Aust has become very politically correct and over regulated…almost a Nanny State…unless your rich and powerful of course, then you do whatever you want, whenever you want and bugger the regulations!
I’m very proud to be a bowhunter and am never ashamed of it, but if you are having a night out at dinner or a party and you just want to relax and enjoy yourself it’s best not to bring it up or you’ll just spend the night having the same old arguement with the same kind of people. A lot of folk in the capital city I live near, Brisbane, seem to have been informed on nature by Disney movies, you know what I mean?

As for Trad gear, Strait Aero, nah mate, it’s pretty easy to get ahold of. We have a few Trad suppliers, and many enthusiastic bowyers. I shoot a ‘Gringa” longbow made by a mate of mine in a town called Bundaberg, about 5 hours from where I live, and would love one of Mark Kimbers ‘Huntsman” recurves. http://huntsmanbows.com.au/ He’s another local bloke, only a couple of hours from my place.

BTW, What on Earth is a “Ditch Panther“??Laughing

Just had a look at that link, Duncan, thanks mate and WOW! Wicked squealers you blokes have over there! They more than match any boars I’ve seen out Western Queensland, that’s for sure! Bloody amazing!Laughing
