Well… Yesterday morning in Garrison! I went back to my ground honey hole that has been so good to me in the previous years, but left it alone in October because this year I couldn’t get closer than 50 yards to any deer. I had a proverbial hunch yesterday, so back I went. I made a little hole to sit in an old stone fence with a big tree to lean back on. the fence runs straight down the very steep hill and 2 trails, one above me, one below, run along the hill among boulders and hemlock blowdowns. The North wind was blowing pretty steady parallel to the trails. This big girl was leading a group of 5 on the trail above and gave me a perfect 20 yard shot. I took her because I thought she might get my scent farther down, even though the thermals were nudging the wind slightly down the mountain. I shot a little forward and high in the shoulder. The broadhead went right thru both shoulders. She rolled down the steep hill and ended about 35 yards away, belly showing. Just in case, I sent another arrow, missed, sent another and hit the lungs. The whole event took about 30 seconds. The butcher told me he had never seen such a hole in the shoulders made by an arrow! He said it looked like a point blank 12ga slug! The 640gr skinny MFX tipped with a single bevel Abowyer Brown bear did its thing! Getting her out of the woods was a labor of love. She weighed at 120lbs, and I had to drag her in the middle of a decimated hemlock forest, and rappel her down 30ft cliffs! 😉 No gym needed after that!
I am blessed with my 3rd deer this season, having killed a doe 15 minutes after I killed my buck back in November. I’m done hunting this year. I leave for Switzerland Tuesday. Thank you Mother Nature, thank you deer!

Those are some beautiful woods!
I lived in that area for 9 months back in the mid ’90’s and thought I was going to be there a while. Rented an apartment in Rinecliff. But alas, got moved by the company down to NC.
Spent all my free time trying to get to know the place and roaming the woods looking for a place to hunt. Deer everywhere then.
It’s no wonder that Teddy R. was inspired by the landscape to become the great conservationist he was.
Now you will have to stay home long enough to eat all those beautiful deer!

Great hunt Alex!!!
I grew up north of you in Granville, NY. A bit colder, a bit steeper, but not much different.
Now in Central Mass. About the same geology as the Catskills. Same glacier carved valleys, same odd ball bulders left in awkward places. Was sitting next to one of those valleys (ravine) with 2/1 pitch on the sides, If you let a deer fall down one of those every bone would be broken by the time he stopped.

I love longbows, and after about 10 years shooting them, I’m having fun shooting a recurve again. Eventually, I will go back to a 62″ or 64″ longbow. Probably another Black Widow! 😀
