My son lives in western MA and was trying to take his hunter safety class to be ready for his own license next year (15! when did that happen?). Right now he wants to quit the class in disgust. The father/son group in front of him laughing every time the instructor talked about the nipple on a black powder weapon, the disparagement of archery (it is too hard, the deer will run for a mile after you shoot it, you ‘must’ have a 30-06 for deer, and more gems), his patience is being overwhelmed.

I do not live near him, so my help is limited. Does anyone know of an archery club or archery-friendly instructors in the Pittsfield, MA area? He is really into archery, and I do not want this to turn him off.

That’s a shame. Hope you find an objective instructor. This also could be a lesson in reality for your son. That he will, in life, have to bump elbows with these people. He may have to learn to hunker down, take the course and walk away with his certificate and a good understanding of who he is and who he never wants to be like.

            hehe
Duncan, those were my words to him. Well, I think mine were “suck it and get the paper, you’re not there to make friends.” But I fear he has inherited my allergy to idiots, and it took me a lot longer than 15 years to overcome it!

BSD… that is a shame. I have been a Hunter Ed Instructor for 20 years. My advise, just drop out or hang in there an finish it for the 10 hours or so required. In either case, I would not hesitate to make a formal complaint to your Fish & Wildlife Education division. Suggest to them to place an undercover officer in the next class, if it is as bad, they will shut him down.

I strongly recommend getting in touch with the White Mountain Traditional Bowhunters. I’m sure there are some members in Western Mass. that would be eager to help. (I’m a member, but I live some distance away in NH.) Club contacts are Charlie Wilson at bets4chas@comcast.net and Harry Hubbard at hubbard.ncm@comcast.net or 603-647-6713.

Thats really unfortunate. but…I don’t think quitting should be an option. At 15 he’s taking alot of his first steps into the real world as a man and he’s bound to realize theres alot of idiots out there (especially on the road!!!) And quitting this will make it more of a temptation to quit other things in the future. I didn’t have any family or friends to teach me how to hunt or shoot. Where in your sons case it sounds like he’s got a level headed dad to teach him what he needs to know. So I would say just get that piece of paper and then you can teach him the right way. From father to son!:D At any rate I would still express your dissapointment to the instructors. As for the classmates that are making fools of themselves, just ignore them and hope that natural selection will take its course!

Thanks Eidsvolling, I will send that info on to him.

A big hindrance is that I live in Minnesota; our time together is limited and phone calls only let me push him so much. I think he may have inherited my allergy to idiots, and it has taken me many years to learn to keep that under control 🙂

The last update from him was that he was going to study on his own and take the test. If he passes, good. If not, back to the next class. Meanwhile, I will be practicing and learning to help both of us hunt in December when he comes out for a visit.
