Hey guys,
I’m somewhat new to the sport, I’ve been shooting for close to a year now. I’ve developed a callus where my index finger pinches the arrow. I never considered it to be much of a problem but as I have been shooting more this summer it has become increasingly painful. After a few days rest it normally feels fine but I’ve got to think this is having adverse effects on my accuracy.
I shoot a 62′ tomahawk longbow, have a 30′ draw length and use a cordovan tab with a spacer. For some reason I have trouble keeping my top finger from pinching down on the arrow. Does anyone have any tips to avoid this? Also, is this something that I shouldn’t worry about too much? The pain is tollerable if I shoot in moderation (every other day or so).
Thanks

jjnap,
You might want to try a different tap or even a shooting glove. Other than that I can’t think of any reason for the pinched finger and callus other than your drawing arm is too high which is causing excessive pressure on that one finger. You should be able to work that out by shooting a blank bale to see what you’re doing wrong. Your fingers shouldn’t be taking a beating like that.

Thanks for the response Steertalker. By the way I mis-titled my post…..I meant “STRING hand index finger pinching”. I just got done shooting and my finger is killing me! Archery must be an addiction….even though it’s hurting me I can’t take a break.
I might try a glove which would cover my whole finger and take away the discomfort. However I’m wondering if the pressure I’m putting down on the nock of the arrow is still a bad thing.
I’m one of those guys, that when trying to bare shaft my arrows always ends up with the nock high. It doesn’t matter how high or low I set my nock point. I think my index finger may be pressing the nock down upon release and the back end of the arrow hits the shelf forcing the back end high. This is just speculation but does anyone have any experience with this?

Hi Jjnapp, I would guess that if you are putting that much pressure on the nock then it will certainly effect arrow flight.
You might try this, without tabs or glove nock an arrow and just start to draw so that you can see and feel whats happening and where your fingers need to be. It may be that you are holding more weight on the middle finger thus pinching the index finger between the string and nock, this may also have an effect when trying to set nock height.
A lot of maybe’s there but good luck and let us know how you get on, Mark.

I say this with all do respect but it sounds like you are pretty new at this so I recommend not worrying about bare shaft tuning. Nock high or nock low…don’t worry about it.

All your experimenting, searching, problem solving should be done on a blank bale approximately 5-8 ft away. Since you’re having issues with your string fingers begin experimenting with different finger pressures first. I would recommend putting even pressure across all 3 fingers on the string. Deep hook, shallow hook…..all done on the bale with no aiming involved. Don’t worry about shooting a target. Immerse all of your thought into that string hand til you find what works for you without pain. The bale is your friend if you will learn to embrace it. It is where all the parts of your shot should be developed and fine tuned. Not on the target range:wink:

JJ,
You may consider changing your release, too. From the sound of it, I take it you’re shooting split finger. Have you tried three fingers under? I tried shooting split finger when I started, and it just didn’t work for me, so I switched to three under, and it helped my accuracy immensely. You may find that switching will help with that finger pinch, too. And definitely give a glove a shot. You can get some pretty decent gloves for pretty cheap, anymore. Good luck and keep us posted.
Michael.

I shoot 3 under, but on my Super Kodiak I have double sting brass string nocks, some shooters do some don’t.
