Looking to try out stone points for hunting mule deer, elk, and bear this year. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to look for in a stone point? Who offers them? Weights, etc.?

You should be able to find some flint knappers in your area, whereever you are. I’ve hunted with stone a little, but have only taken one shot – at a pig. I hit him high in the shoulder and didn’t get any penetration.

Stone heads should be just as sharp as a good steel head, only serrated. I’ve seen folks hunting with stone that was more like a butter knife. That ain’t good. The heads looked great and were very well made, but not very sharp. There is a special way of knapping the edge that leaves it very sharp. Whoever you get your points from should realize that.

If your truly interested in hunting with stone points, you really need to know how to knap them yourself. That way you can also resharpen them yourself. Hunting with stone points is really post-graduate traditional hunting and is certainly not for everyone! If you decide to do this, try them on local small game first to get a feel for the very real difference they make.
